    Hi ,
From my childhood, I have a tendency to get into trouble always. I would always misplace things, I can't count the number of pens and pencils I have lost, I used to get scolded for not being obedient when I couldn't even remember what I was told to do. I would have locked the door only thing different being i would have not latched it.. had a tough time at school too. I could never listen to the teacher for more than 2 minutes, I used to get distracted.. Though I was very good at academics, that was always because I would learn everything from scratch later all by myself.. I have a reputation for ruining things as I don't handle it careful enough as well and I take more time in learning things involving motor skills compared to others. And these things used to make lot of people make fun of me as being unaware or unconscious.. I have earned a lot of nicknames as well.. I had a tough time learning to drive as well as I could concentrate only on one thing at a time. Driving is more of an effort than comfort .. I would drop things on my way, and though I am a stickler for cleanliness, I would mess up and then reorganize rather than doing it right the first time itself.. I would get distracted when someone is talking to me and unless I have the subtitles on, I can never concentrate on the movie and it is tough for me to sit still in a theatre as I can never rewind and watch what I have missed..

I became aware of terms like ADD or ADHD only when I was in college..

Do you ILs feel that this is also ADD??
Does anyone have ADD in this forum? How do you manage to handle this? I don't want to use ADD as an excuse but this is making life difficult for people around me. Ay valuable input?

    Op,
What you mention are a set of skills known as 'executive function skills.' a lack of these does occur with most kinds of learning disabilities-ADHD included.

I would recommend that you read up on this...one of the best books on this topic (though it is for school age children) is 'smart but scattered'...there are a couple more but I don't have access to those right now..will give you the names soon. See if the library has this and see if you can relate to some of the things described.

adults with ADHD Benefit from having an ADHD coach...even high school students and college students use the services of coaches-who teach you how to form your own plan, how to follow thru, evaluate, etc. They don't do the work for you but guide you to take charge...
My suggestion is read up, maybe talk to a coach in your area, they will be able to guide you if you need a diagnosis (for the insurance to cover the fee). you can evaluate the usefulness of such a service after a reasonable period oftime to see if tis is indeed what you need.

Hi teacher thank you for the reply. I will try to get that book. You know, I get very frustrated with myself when I am being made fun of. Well they were not to be blamed, as it looks very awkward and funny... For example, I always forget to remove the price tag before wearing a new dress!! Do you know how many times I have been caught red handed!!! That is why Unless someone does something on purpose, I never make fun of them... I have a tendency to walk in a trance to.. I think all these facts make outsiders take me lightly...

Count me in.. Thanks for starting this thread.. Mine is not so severe as yours. But i have always been told us careless and slow during childhood. I ve to put a lot of effort for simple things which others do juz like tat like keeping things in place, finishing things perfectly. Used to skip from one task to other without completing the first.. In india the awareness is very very less.. I see kids in my neighbour hood with ADD who are emotionally struggling alot.. I would try the books teacher has suggested. Thank you teacher for suggestions.

Ok...to make you feel better I will share one of the most embarrassing incidents...on my second date with my husband, I was all smartly turned out and really charged...I felt on top of the world and walked in to meet him at this high flying restaurant...everyone is looking at me and I am thrilled...and then my date walks up with this wicked grin and points out..."Did you go shopping to buy new clothes for this date? It makes me feel so special!" there I was wondering how he knew I had gone shopping, wanting to wipe his smirk off...only I had the price tag and the size marker on my pants...stuck to the front where even I could see:)

A few months down the road, it was summer and again I am out to meet him...feeling very nice...love my new dress and walk down one of those busy pedestrian streets...and there he is again with a "I am so happy you are in a rush to meet me!" comment...turns out I walked that entire street with a huge tag sticking out? Now he just reminds me before we step out..."did you get the tag on this outfit?"

Trust me you are not alone on that one...

Yeah, I understand why this makes other people laugh , as these things require little effort and consciousness :)..
I get annoyed when people call me careless as I do care about things:):)
