    A Time for Orchids of Karnataka​

    The Western Ghats of Karnataka have a rich variety of Orchids. Three years or so back my wife and a few of her friends went for a sort of trek and retreat to the Kotachadri area for a welcome break they said (So say all of us, said the husbands).
    My wife and I are keen on orchids. She brought back a bunch of orchids.

    Orchids may be terrestrial – grow in the ground- or epiphytic – grow on trees. Here are a few of the epiphytes.

    The first is Aerides masculose Lindley in bud. The second is the same plant in bloom. The flowers have a mild but fine perfume.

    The third is Aerides Ringens (Lindley) Fischer in flower, which in this are white and pale lilac.

    The fourth is Dendrobium Nutantiflorum Hawkes and Heller flowering in a waste paper basket with coconut husk as soil.

    Want to list out colours then search for ORCHIDS.
    They are the queen of hues and the hanging stalk proves that THEY were.

    Beautiful orchids! A feast for the eyes!

    Would they need a lot of sun, Arunadhri sir? I have a west facing balcony - wondering if I can grow orchids there.
