A Return Gift From The Birthday Baby

Dear Pushpavalli,
I would not have been happier even if this poem had won some literary award. At a time when I was facing stiff opposition from my dear friends for posting the poem on my birthday (of course the opposition, like the support, is also borne out of love) your post comes as a welcome breeze - it is like the sudden showers that blesses us all of a sudden on a Agni Nakshatram day.
We can't invite Yama Dharma a second earlier than our appointed time. Nor can we ask him come one nano second later after our time has come.
You are right Pushpavalli, children should be exposed to the reality of death. And I think the best way to do that (as sowparnika mentioned) is to tell them first the nachiketas story. It is difficult to understand our life if we fail to understand death.
And what more day is more appropriate than one's birthday?
I am very happy (more relieved than happy) that you enjoyed the return gift.

My Dear GFs,
I don't know how this poem affected you. But it has affected me very much. I had my usual walk today (remember Will You Walk With Me Series.) and during the walk I could not think of anything else but the poem.
As I was surrounded by all types of vehicles flying past me, cars, buses, mini buses, LCVs,cars, two-wheelers, tri-cycles and hand drawn carts, as I was enveloped by the noise, by the pollution, I could suddenly feel peace deep inside me. And in that moment of peace, the Tamil words of the poem started appearing in my mind. I did not want to translate the poem into Tamil as I was sure that it will lose its beauty when rendered in a different language than which it was conceived.
I could not do anything after reaching home. I could not focus on my writing or even my mails. I abandoned all my work and started writing the translation in unicode. And it is not a word by word translation but a free, liberal translation.
I have known many women who will look chic in denim trousers and T-shirts. And will be graceful in traditional silk sarees too. My translated poem reminded me of those women.
Well, since I am the author, everything will look fine to me. After all as they say in Tamil, for a crow, her younger ones are her darlings. (Kakkaikku than kunju pon kunju)
But what do you think, GFs?
I am only releasing a part of the translation now. If you, my GFs, find it worthy, will release the other parts soon.

Here's the Tamil Version that has been haunting me for over 3 hours:

கால தேவதையே வருக - முதல் பகுதி

வரலொட்டி ரெங்கசாமி
​

'கற்ற கல்வி கைவிடலாம்
பெற்ற செல்வம் போய் விடலாம்
உற்ற நண்பர் என வந்துற்றார் உதறித் தள்ளிடலாம்
மற்றாரும் மறந்திடலாம் மனம் மாறிடலாம்

கொற்றவனே நீயே துணையென்றுன்
பொற்றாம்ரைத்தாளொன்றே பற்றென்று
பற்றிவிட்டாற்பின் நீயே
கைவிட்டால் கதி வேறு இல்லையப்பா'

ஜபித்து ஜபித்து நெஞ்சில் தழும்பேற்றிய வார்த்தைகள்
வழக்கமான நாள் வழக்கமான இடம் வழ்க்கமான ஜபம்
வழக்கமாகிவிட்ட வாழ்க்கை வழக்கமான படுக்கை

களைத்த என் கண்கள் தாளிடாத கதவைப் பார்த்தன

'நமது பயணம் நெடுந்தூரமோ?'

'பகல் நேரத்திலேயே என் பணி முடித்துவிட்டேன்
இரவாகிவிட்டது இருள் சூழ்ந்துவிட்டது

உன்னுடன் செல்ல நானும் தயார்
என்றாலும் இந்த வ்லியை நினைத்தால் தான்.......'

'நோயும் வலியும் உன்னைத் தாக்கிய போது
நீ செய்யும் ஜபத்தை இப்போது செய்'
கட்டளையிட்டாள் கால தேவதை! கீழ்ப்படிந்தேன்

'காலமெல்லாம் முடிந்து காலதேவதைக்காக
காத்திருக்கும் வேளை
உயிர் கொல்லும் வலி வந்து
உடல் எல்லாம் தாக்குங்கால்
உலகாளும் முதல்வனே
உன் நாமம் ஒரு முறை சொல்லும்
உணமையான வலிமை வேண்டும்.

அது உயிர் கொல்லும் வலியெனினும்
உடலெல்லாம் உள்ளமெல்லாம் இனிக்கச் செய்யும்.

அது அப்போது ஆனால் இப்போது.....
வலியில் இருந்து என்னை நீ விடுவிக்க வேண்டாம்
வலியைத் தாங்கும் வலிமையைக் கொடு போதும்

I have also heard of Azhwar's appodaikku ippodhe solli vaithen. And it is nice to hear those words from you now. For it was only yesterday morning did I resume my "thiruvaimozhi sandhai" which I had left at the time of my US trip.

I am not at all offended to know that you prefer the denim clad angel to the "சேலை கட்டிய தேவதை" Some devotees prefer the butter-thief Kannan, while some love the Gopika-samedha Krishna, and yet others worship the Geethacharyan when his words almost hug us, "sarva dharmaan paridhyajya..."

When I showed this translation to my dear wife, the great woman who has put up with me for almost quarter century, she told me that she loved both the denim version as well as the nine-yards version. She has to, you know. But I am happy that you have given your preference.

You are right Pushpavalli. Nothing is in our hands. I read the Prayer of Abandonment in the early Christian tradition. That's the final prayer uttered at the time of final anointment immediately before death. That is in the same spirit.

Dear, dear, Sundari,
I felt bad that I had hurt you on two counts - that I could not reply individually to each in the punchline thread and second that you were upset by my posting this poem as a b'day gift.

You are right sundari, this prayer is not during the end, but during the middle, in the midst of active living. That's why I contrasted the prayer with the words, athu appodhu aanal ippodhu...
Knowing about you I am sure you would have prayed like this even while you were in the womb. Who else but you could have faced this kind of challenge and ultimately come out of it all, unscathed. Yes, She stood by you in each of your trials and safeguarded your heart. She did not let it go hard by trials, but softer by your penance.

How true, Sundari.
