    A Date with Mangalsutra (Thirumangalyam)

It was summer and just around dawn. Under well illuminated floral canopied stage, wedding proceedings were in full swing. Senior men and women and priests in traditional attire squat around the bride and groom. A grand old lady with weak knees seated snugly in an arm-chair urged someone to call the lady in-charge of store-room.

Dharini clad in hipster silk-saree, after securely locking the bride’s room was striding the path to the stage. A thin-built young mother with an infant crying over her shoulder stopped Her on her track and said she was seeking secluded place to breast feed her baby and beseeched Dharini to permit her for that purpose into the bride’s room. The lady was impressively attired with designer-blouse and lehenga-saree wearing considerable jewels.

Dharini thought for a moment and considered the ‘plight’ of the young lady with ‘crying’ infant. She opened the bride’s-room and permitted the lady to walk in. She placed the lock and key bunch in an alcove and left the place after instructing the lady to remain in the room until she returns.

Dharini came to the stage and met the grand-mother of the bride sitting in an arm-chair. The latter cupped her hand over Dharini's ear, whispered that auspicious moment commences shortly and therefore she should quickly fetch the Thirumangalyam–Mangalsutra- kept in a velvet box.

Dharini strode back and shocked to find the store-room locked from outside. Beads of sweat gathered on her forehead. She mentioned about the young lady with infant and described her attire to some others. The lady with infant in lehenga-saree was identified from CCTV images. Soon many were searching for that lady with baby-in-arms but to no avail.

The bride’s father had a duplicate key for the lock with which, the store-room was opened. Dharini was the first to enter the room. She was shell-shocked to find the designer blouse and the lehenga-saree worn by the lady was tossed into a corner. She opened the steel trunk and found the velvet box missing.

The auspicious duration was almost over, yet the parents of the groom maintained aplomb. They had suggested that since next auspicious moment commences just after two hours, another set of Thirumangalyam could be arranged. Seeing the plight of bride’s parents, he told them his brother and sister-in-law would fetch Thirumangalyam shortly.

No sooner he said this, a car honking arrived at the portico and a senior couple was alighting. The lady was waving showing the tiny blue box to groom’s dad and passed it on to the stage. After an hour so, the proceedings began from where it was left for want of Thirumangalyam. Dharini and parents of bride expressed their eternal indebtedness to groom’s father.

The spouse of groom’s uncle was softly telling to the gathering “for my daughter Kausalya's wedding, we had kept it ready and that came handy now. Her wedding fixed for next Friday here.”

Very nice to read. Yes, people can be very mean at times, but what brings solace and hope is that not all are that bad. Thanks for sharing this here Mr. Thyagarajan. -rgs
