பிறன் இல் விழையாமை
PIRAN IL VIZHAIYAAMAI

NOT COVETING ANOTHER'S WIFE

141. பிறன்பொருளான் பெட்டொழுகும் பேதைமை ஞாலத்து
அறம்பொருள் கண்டார்கண் இல்.
Piranporulaan pettozhugum pedhaimai gnaalathu
aramporul kandaarkan il.

பிறரின் மனைவியை விரும்பும், அறியாமை, உலகில் அறமும் பொருளையும் ஆராய்ந்து உணர்ந்து நடப்பவரிடம் காணப்படுவதில்லை.
The foolishness of coveting another’s wife shall not be seen in those who know the qualities of virtue and wealth.

142. அறன்கடை நின்றாருள் எல்லாம் பிறன்கடை
நின்றாரின் பேதையார் இல்.
Arankadai ninraarul ellaam pirankadai
ninraarin pedhaiyaar il.

பிறன் மனைவியை விரும்பி அவன் வீட்டு வாசலில் நிற்பவர், அறவழியை விட்டு தீயவழியில் செல்லும் கடை நிலை மனிதரைக் காட்டிலும், அறிவிலிகள் ஆவர்.
Among all the law breaking fools, there is none worse
than he who lurks around his neighbour’s door.

143. விளித்தாரின் வேறல்லர் மன்ற தெளிந்தாரில்
தீமை புரிந்தொழுகு வார்.
Vilithaarin veralla mandra thelindhaaril
theemai purindhozhugu vaar.

நம்பி பழகியவரின் மனைவியின் மீது விருப்பம் கொண்டு தீமை செய்பவர், பிணத்திற்கு சமமானவர் ஆவர்.
Those who have evil designs on the wife of a confiding friend are considered worse than the dead.

144. எனைத்துணையர் ஆயினும் என்னாம் தினைத்துணையும்
தேரான் பிறனில் புகல்.
Enaithunaiyar aayinum ennaam thinaithunayum
theraan piranil pugal.

பிறன் மனைவியை விரும்புதல் பிழையானது என்பதை தினையளவும் சிந்தித்துப்பாராமல் நடப்பவர், எத்துணை பெருமையுடையவராக இருப்பினும். மதிக்கப்படுவதில்லை.
All the greatness one may possess is of no use
If he seeks the wife of another.

145. எளிதென இல்லிறப்பான் எய்துமெஞ் ஞான்றும்
விளியாது நிற்கும் பழி.
Elidhena illirappaan eydhum engyaandrum
viliyaadhu nirkkum pazhi.

எளிதான அடையலாம் என பிறன் மனைவியிடன் முறைகேடாக நடப்பவன், என்றும் அழியாத பழிக்கு ஆளாவான்.
He who thinks lightly of coveting another’s wife
shall acquire guilt that shall cling to him forever.

Dear IL friends,
This is great work you are doing.Iam enjoying reading these kurals and their meaning.I remember my school days when we had to learn chapters of kural compulsorily and write them without spelling mistakes.Thirukural is simply amazing,Thiruvalluvar uses two sentences to to spell out truths or norms for truthful living which will take voluimes and volumes to explain and janams to understand.

Thanks for your presence here. your words do keep us do more on this subject..true we memorised and wrote them correctly...to understand and follow those will take time...why can't we atleast cultivate some if not all...
