i do remember you. no you were not careless. we all make mistakes and we get a chance to correct them. parenting is a trial and error. what worked for your 1st kid does not woek for your 2nd so it is going with your gut instinct and what you feel is right at that point and we also try to do things that we were left wanting in our childhood forgetting that though our kids are from us they are not us. the dynamics change.

you can still work on being a friend and mom. don’t become the strict mom that she clams up. communication is the key.
accepting and acknowledging issues like peer pressure, stress and hormonal changes and talking about them and how to handle them without making them feel bad or onferiror or lacking.

encouragement and appreciations and choices go a long way at this point. keep talking but do listen even a silent child speaks a lot while we term them stubborn..

patience patience and calmness is the most important ingredients when kids enter pre teen and teens

packing the tv does it really help. social networking and media has put everything on their finger tips and withdrawal resistance will be high when she is a 14/15 yr girl.
i would say make it about 30 minutes of phone time and 1 hr of tv time. and the choice is hers. talk to her about the reasons for study, the need for education her goals and where does her board exams figure in her goals.. and please dont step on the acclerator aka nag mode every few hours. she will not want to touch the book. no pressure is the highest pressure.

    step back a little
