Are parents not allowed for a girl’s 13 year old physical ?? That sounds strange ?? And the doctors are doing exams of private parts? Is that normal or am I just being over cautious?!!

I understand that the father is not allowed but why is the mother not allowed !???

When my older child turned 12, our pediatrician suggested I step out for part of the visit. Since then, I would stay in the room initially to discuss school, nutrition, and any concerns. Then, I’d step out while the doctor conducted the exam and had a 1-1 conversation with my child, sometimes with a nurse present. Later, I’d be invited back for a quick wrap-up on any findings or follow-up needed.

This private time gives the child a chance to discuss any concerns openly. Over time, my involvement lessened; by 16, I no longer went in with them, and by 17 or so, they started driving themselves to appointments.

Yes, the exam includes checking for puberty and related development. The examination is usually non-invasive (external) only. But, if there are issues like heavy periods or vaginal infection, maybe they do more detailed exams.
