for stitching silks use thinner needle .I have forgotten the number..While stitching thin material keep a sheet of news paper under the fabric and stitch.later on you can tear the paper.

    Which needle shall I use?

There are different types and sizes of needles for different type of fabrics. Selecting the size of the needle is very important while stitching thin materials. Needle size varies according to the thickness of the fabric, the lighter the fabric smaller the needle size, Heavier the fabric larger the needle size. Needle size also depends on the thread we use. If we use fine thread we have to use smaller needle size.
In European metric sizing system needles are numbered 60 to 110. In American sizing system it is numbered from 8 to 18.Lower the number finer the needle and higher the number thicker the needle.
You might try laying the fabric on top of strips of tissue paper and sewing through all layers. You can even use toilet paper as a support. Following chart helps to decide the size of the needle while sewing.

    hi vani,
thanks for the info on the needle sizes. although i in general use 14no for cottons and 16 for heavier fabrics, for the satin and silk cloth i use 11 no. 9 nos is very difficult to get. use of paper underneath does give a good stitch.

also, when doing hemming for longer lengths of cloth like saree falls, frocks edges, we should form knots, after few stitches so that the hemming doesnt giveaway easily.

    regards
    hema
