    Hi moms,

sob sob... my 4 yr old darling boy has been prescribed glasses for mild short-sight and astigmatism:cry:. Both me and DH wear glasses for slight power.... all that aside, this thread is to invite moms with kids that wear glasses to share their tips.

How do they play etc., with glasses on? I have no doubt my son will get used to that fitting pretty soon, given his age and willingness to adapt... but your thoughts will make my heart lighter...

I can't advise you on this since no body in my family wears glasses.

But, the other day I was watching ramdev baba's video on youtube about how yoga can cure many ailments and he says even people who have been prescribed glasses ...after doing this yoga/pranayama and eating healthy diet can get rid of it.

Since your son is so young ,I think you can start training him to do yoga/pranayama/healthy natural diet that might help.

Check out youtube..just type in ramdevbaba and see what he has got to say on eye health.

    Hi Latha,

I dont have an experience on what you are asking. But let me try - I started wearing glasses when I was 10+ year old. With glasses, vision was comfortable...but I used to hate it when I had to play outdoor games. I remember once when I was playing with friends outside, my glasses were thrown out to the ground and broke! I had problems keeping it clean too considering all the playing, sweating, etc.
Choose the glasses that are comfortable for him and doesn't hurt him anywhere and also keep a check on his confidence level. I had developed a kind of inferiority complex since my brother(younger by 2.5 years) used to tease me saying I'm half blind. To come to terms and not to get carried away by the remarks people make, it took some time for me then! So as a parent, you can help him.
You can also help your son by giving good Vitamin A diet....so that this problem doesn't gradually increase! Check with your doctor for eye exercises, diet, etc.
After wearing glasses for almost 10 years and contact lens for 3-4 years, I'm now happy after the laser treatment. No glasses or lens :thumbsup

    HTH, (heart to heart)

A friend's child wears glasses, does that count for experience :)
She got plastic lenses and a non-breakable frame that is hung from the shoulder. The child was around 5 years and has been very comfortable with the glasses. When they are playing rough and tumble games, the glasses are put neatly into a case and comes out only after all kind of contact games are over. I am sure your LO will learn how to use it quickly.
@Hema, vitamin A is for night blindness and does not impact on astigmatism or myopia.
The statutory cautionary note about alternative medicine from me ;-): I have worn glasses for 20 years now and have been doing various stuff, including homoeopathic eye drops. I will not take that risk with a child given the lack of standardisation.

((hugs)) Latha. I wore glasses (the real thick soda buddi kind) from when I was 7 so I do know how it feels. I also come from a family of myopics (and Dh is one too - poor A - with genes like that!). Children cope very well and very quickly too. All it takes is for Aniish to realize how much nicer the world looks with his galsses and he will never take them off :) My nephew started glasses a year back at age 4 and adapted in a matter of weeks. He has nice, light plastic ones (thankfully) despite fairly high myopia and is as active a boy as any other. So dont worry - A will definitely manage well. After he's all grown - up there's always Lasik :)

And of course I go with Krithika on the alternative medicine - when you know the physiological basis of myopia its rather far-fetched that eye drops would change the curvature or shape of the eyeball. Exercises might not help much but will atleast do no harm.

    Hi Latha

My son A, started wearing glasses when he was 5. He had the same problem as your son. I too started with plastic but later switched to lightweight metal frame. He has been on metal frame for the last 5 yrs and has adjusted very well. No fear of breaking and also lighter than plastic.

Just one more thing... We were living overseas and I had his eyes checked by optometrist and was given prescription glasses. My relative there advised me to go to an ophthalmologist since A was very young. Believe me it was the best thing I did. I was told that A has lazy eye and that it can be treated by wearing a patch over the good eye and this treatment only works till the child is 8. The reason why I am telling you this long story is just to make sure that your boy has been checked by a specialist.

That apart, dont worry about glasses. Kids adjust and adapt very well.

    Cheers

    hi latha,
im really really late in replying your thread. 1st of all a big hug from me to you and a msg along with it....all is gonna be fine. im a person with born squint due to weak eye muscle. i was asked to wear glasses when i was i think in kg1 or kg2. that time i just didnt knw why i was told to wear glasses. but my mom being very strict made me wear plastic glasses which was hung with a string in my neck. since my defect was from birth, doctors didnt want any operations to be performed and i was asked to wear glasses at all times. even while playing. i found it very difficult but then got used to it slowly. as i grew up people started calling me lucky due to my squint which was from birth. so many suggested there was no question of any laser treatment as i was confortable with glasses. i remember playing, dancing, skipping wearing my glasses on. once your child is big enough you can switch to lens. in my case that is also not possible due to the squint. so now im so very used to wearing glasses that i dont like myself without it. also do get your LO checked by a proper specialist. sometimes if eye defects which are known at early age do tend to become perfect if early action is taken. so dont worry dear all will be fine.

(sorry for the long story :hide:)

    Hi Latha,
((HUGS))) to you. i understand how u feel, i wore glasses when i was very young (3rd grade) and in my side everyone wears glasses, so i am worried abt my son too. he is 3 and when should i go for a check up?
i am mentally prepared but wanted to take precautions.
one this i am worried is it keeps increasing as they grow. thats what happened to me. so is there anyway to maintain the power?
if u try any alternative medicine, yoga pls let me know, i will also try it.

i have been checking my son always when he watches tv, friends said if he goes near the tv everytime to watch, then it could be something we have to check.
pls let me know how u found out, when to go for check up, at what age and how do they do test for such young kids.

Have an extra pair of glasses, incase ur kid looses it or breaks it , you will have a spare one.
