My betel plant

    Dear Shanthi,
    The traditional Vriktchi and hibiscus could be kept in bigger pots, but we have to prune them when they grow out of proportion. Mehendhi also we keep pruning. Tomatoes are real treat and they grow nicely and yield lots of fruits in bunches. This year due to the excess rain we didn't plant them.We have only a small terrace now. At Pallikaranai we had lots of trees and trditional flower plans and so we used to grow vegetable plants at cortons and potys at terrace.
    Now We have planted a bittergourd and just two kaiis are coming now. We have to go out for a few days and we do not know what will become to our plants. Last time we told our maid to water them, but almost all the plants dried up. At times I feel just to put an end to our passion of gardening. When ever we go out we keep our fingers crossed.     I tried last year and mine almost died, do you use miracle grow and water once every 2-3 days?

    I do not grow this plant . If you scroll throught the posts you can see who is growing and where they live etc.

    I have also given some more information on growing this plant in this forum.

    Please do look through it and hope you find it helpful. I will try and ask my friends if they grow this plant indoors and how to take care of it.

    Where do you get betal plant in USA? Can you use fresh betal leave in the soil?

    Now i am interested in gardening and in the process. Very delighted to see your betel plant.

    Can we grow the betel plants in the soil? or pots are necessary? Since some people advised that in the winter we can shift the betel pot inside, is planting in soil injurious to them?

    How to grow the betel plants? any seeds for this?

    Your green tomatoes are superb.

    Dear Swathi,
    In our independant house we had kept the betel plant on the ground only. It was coming up very nicely. When we shifted to the flat we shifted it to a pot. You can get the plant from a nursery. As it is a climber you have to arrange for pandal or can allow it to climb on a tree nearby. In Tamilnad you don't have to shift the plant indoors unless you are staying in Ooty or kodai.
