Thiruvisanallur is a small village in the bank of cauvery river near Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District.
There were only 30-40 brahmin families and the total population was around 300 only. Rukku Mami's
family was a very poor and orthodox family. She got married at the age of nine and lost her husband
in her sixteenth year. She had only one daughter by name Mogambal. In 1907 female children going
out for schooling was very rare. Hence Mogam was not able to go to school. But due to her keen interest,
she learnt Sanskrit by herself from the Sastrigals who were her neighbours.

Rukku Mami used to make appalam etc and sell for her livelyhood. She used to go for samayal work also.
She made her daughter marry to Sri Appudu, who was working in the Cooperative Society in Thiruvidaimarudur. Mogam's MIL was also a widow and hence all of them were living with MIL's brother Mali.

They were living in a neighbouring Village Veppathur. When Mogam got married there were 7 children in
the age group 2 to 8 and they all used to call her Athaamanni. By then she had become Athaamanni to the
whole village and she was Athaamanni for everyone till her death.

Athaamanni hardly lived 8 years with her husband and he died of Cancer. Since then she had started living
for others only. She had a daughter Rajeswari,a pretty girl. Somehow Athaamanni made her to do her
school final and got her married to a person who was a teacher in Ganapathi Agraharam.

After her daughter's marriage Athaamanni went to Kasi (Gaya) removed her hair and started wearing
Naarmadi, those days widow's style of saree. Even after that also her problems were not over. Her
daughter who came for delivery died on 16th day of her delivery. Now Athaamanni started living for her
grand daughter Exactly one year after the birth her grand daughter also died of Jaundice. Meanwhile she
lost her MIL also.

At the age of 40 she came to Madras to help one of her distant relatives girl, who was having heart problem, not got married and working in a school. Again Athaamanni 's work started. She had to get up
early morning to make everything ready for the girl. Athaamanni was helping her till her death. She used
to tell that she should die without troubling anyone. As per wish, she died at the age of 80 with no trouble
to anyone. She had even kept some money for, whoever does her last rites. She herself arranged for
performing yearly DEVASAM at Raghavendra Temple. The only work she left for others were, to inform the
month and thithi of her death to the Mutt.

I would prefer this opportunity to show my gratitude to her. I hope she will definitely bless us from the
Heaven.

Only a few take that one step forward to help others though not really in a position to do so. Ur athaamanni should have had lots of determination to see all that happened n she should have had a big heart to extend her hand in help to others. I know of somebody like her, my very distant relative. She lost her husband wen she was pregnant n lost her baby too within a few mins of its birth. As what she started off as a good life seemed to have come to an end within that 12 months time. But she regained her strength soon n made up her mind to spend the rest of her life doing something worth spending this precious life God has given her. She is now more than 65, doing service in a mutt in Chennai, teaching students for the past 40 years. Whenever i hear or think of her, i feel like saluting her. Theres a lot to learn for us from ppl like your athaamanni. :bowdown

Dear Lalitha

Your Athamanni seems to be a great lady with will power. After having so many problems and inspite of her husband's death in a short period it was great of her to continue her life and being helpful to others.

It shows how nice she was that she died without troubling anyone and also to have arranged for her devasam also. A great soul with tremendous
will power. She will definitely bless u.

This is a heartfelt tribute to many women like your Ataamanni, working silently and making no noise of the brickbats that life throws at them.
