Which industry . If it is Computer science, i would worry more about the type of work after college and VISA . It should be niche, if it is a good company Visa is squared out. If no visa issues, and work is challenging, i would not worry too much about first job. he can work hard and get super hike for his skills within 2 years. Salary is important but first job , in Computer industries other factors are important too.

The kid does have hefty loans, paid almost full tuition for M.S. and wants to send money home to mother
too who is widowed and used pension funds for his tickets and side expenses.

happens. but just to cover that, cannot take a bad role . Again applies to CS.

Here in the west, personal life is supposed to be kept personal and it is looked down upon, if someone shares a personal situation to any negotiation.

moreover, some desis would find it hard to believe that there have been instances where some desi people in tech world were told by HR of famous organizations that their offer stands withdrawn while negotiation was going on salary ..

it seems they did not negotiate properly or had a bad attitude during negotiation or shared unnecessary information in salary negotiation.

Only use valid data points ( not personal loan Situation or personal life changes like divorce etc) and public information ( data points) to negotiate like if moving from LCOL to HCOL city
