Dear Thyagarajan, Morality should be what one practices even when no one is watching. It has to be the fabrics of our attitude, behavior and character. We have to be conscious of our actions as every such action creates a positive or negative impact in the society we live in and in the world. When we compromise on morality, it also creates indeligible impact in our character as well. Morality and integrity are twin sisters. Morality is the belief that some behavior is right and acceptable, and that other behavior is wrong. Morality is the system and principles and values concerning people's behavior, which s generally accepted by a society. Integrity is the quality of having a strong ethical or moral principles and following them at all times, no matter who is watching. A person with integrity acts with honesty, honor, and truthfulness. While the inner world consists of mind, behavior, habits, values, thoughts, mindset, emotions, and beliefs, the outer world consists of places, people, experiences, media consumption and environment. Any dent in morality and integrity will have profound impact in both inner and outer world. Integrity is choosing thoughts and actions based on values rather than personal gain. What are the benefit of practicing morality and integrity? The person becomes reliable, gains good reputation, feels at peace, becomes confident and admirable, builds good relationships, emerges as a natural leader and inspires others. Here is the test I had given to moral class consists of teens and asked them to truly answer "Agree" or "Disagree" to the following questions: 1) Overall, it is better to be humble and honest than to be successful and dishonest 2) If you trust someone completely, you are asking for trouble 3) A leader should take action only if it is morally right 4) A good way to handle people is to tell them what they like to hear 5) There is no excuse for telling a white lie to someone 6) It makes sense to flatter important people 7) Most people who get ahead as leaders have led moral lives 8) It is better not to tell people the real reason you did something unless it benefits you to do so 9) The majority of people are brave, good, and kind 10) It is hard to get to the top without sometimes cutting corners.
Dear Sri Thyagarajan, I know French in Paris love to intimidate people who speak English by trying to answer the questions in French. However, I have taken rides in Metro and it is pretty straight forward even though it is totally automated. However, at least, one ticket issuer is always there in every Metro station to address the questions from the commuters. They have maps printed clearly in English and the origin and destination of each Metro. I used to physically count the number of stations to get to my destination even though after sometime, you will begin to recognize French letters. Interestingly, there are a few junctions where all Metro routes integrate allowing the commuters to change the Metro. It is amazing that Metros underground are one on top of the other making me think there is a whole world underneath Paris. Only people say Rome has one city underneath the current city which is why Italy has a rule that anything found underground can't be taken away from Italy. Honestly, I believe this student found an excuse to ride the Metro without tickets.

This reminds me of a story in tamil which for want oftime am 7nable to translate into English . ஒரு ராஜா காட்டுக்கு வேட்டையாட சென்றார். நேரம் போனது தெரியாமல் வேட்டையாடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும்போது மாலை நேரம் வந்து எங்கும் இருள் கவ்வத் தொடங்கிவிட்டது. அப்போது தூரத்தில் தெரிந்த ஒரு மரத்தின் மீது ஏதோ ஒரு மிருகம் அமர்ந்திருப்பதை போல இருந்தது. மிகப் பெரிய உருவமாக இருந்தபடியால் ஏதேனும் கொடிய மிருகமாகத் தான் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று கருதி, வில்லில் அம்பைப் பூட்டி மரத்தை நோக்கி பாணத்தை செலுத்தினான். அடுத்த சில வினாடிகளில் மரத்தின் மீதிருந்து “ஐயோ… அம்மா” என்ற குரல் கேட்டது. ஏதோ ஒரு மிருகத்தின் ஓலம் கேட்கும் என்று எதிர்பார்த்தால் இப்படி மனிதனின் ஓலம் கேட்கிறதே… யாரையோ தவறுதலாக கொன்றுவிட்டோமோ என்று அஞ்சி மரத்தை நோக்கி விரைந்தான். அங்கு சென்று பார்த்தால் பதினாறு வயதையொத்த சிறுவன் ஒருவன் இவரின் அம்புக்கு பலியாகி வீழ்ந்து கிடந்தான். “இப்படி ஒரு விபரீதம் நிகழ்ந்துவிட்டதே” என்று பதைபதைத்த அரசன், உடனே காவலாளிகளை கூப்பிட்டு, “இவன் பெற்றோர் அருகே தான் எங்காவது இருக்கவேண்டும். உடனே கண்டுபிடித்து அழைத்து வாருங்கள்” என்று கட்டளையிட்டான். வீரர்கள் நாலாபக்கமும் விரைந்தனர். கடைசியில் ஒரு விறகுவெட்டி தம்பதியினரை அழைத்து வந்தனர். “இவர்கள் தான் அந்த பாலகனின் பெற்றோர். காட்டில் விறகு வெட்டி பிழைப்பது தான் இவர்கள் தொழில்” என்று மன்னனிடம் கூறினார்கள். மன்னன் அவர்களிடம் நடந்ததைக் கூறி, “என்னை மன்னித்துவிடுங்கள். நான் வேண்டுமென்று உங்கள் மகனை கொல்லவில்லை. அறியாமல் நடந்த தவறு இது. போதிய வெளிச்சம் இல்லாததாலும் தூரத்திலிருந்து அம்பெய்ததாலும் மரத்தின் மீதிருந்தது ஏதோ ஒரு விலங்கு என்று எண்ணிவிட்டேன்….” தான் சொன்னதைக் கேட்டு அவர்கள் சமாதானாகவில்லை என்று யூகித்துக்கொண்டான். அடுத்தநொடி கைதட்டி தனது காவலர்களை அழைத்தவன் இரண்டு பெரிய தட்டுக்கள் கொண்டு வருமாறு கட்டளையிட்டான். அருகே நின்றுகொண்டிருந்த அமைச்சரிடம், இரண்டு தட்டுக்களை அவர்கள் முன்பு வைக்கச் சொன்னான். தட்டுக்கள் வைக்கப்பட்டபிறகு அதில் ஒரு தட்டில் பொற்காசுகளை கொட்டி தான் அணிந்திருந்த விலைமதிப்பற்ற ஆபரணங்கள் நகைகள், நவரத்தின மாலை, முத்தாரம் என அனைத்தையும் வைத்தான். பின்னர் தன் இடுப்பிலிருந்த உடைவாளை உருவி, அதை மற்றொரு தட்டில் வைத்தான். “மக்களை காக்கவேண்டிய நானே எனது குடிமகன் ஒருவன் உயிரிழக்க காரணமாகிவிட்டேன். நான் தண்டிக்கப்படவேண்டியவன். பாதிக்கப்பட்ட உங்களிடமே தீர்ப்பை கூறும் வேலையை விட்டுவிடுகிறேன். நான் செய்த தவறுக்கு பிராயச்சித்தம் (பரிகாரம்) இது தான். இதோ ஒரு தட்டு நிறைய பொற்காசுகள் விலைமதிப்பற்ற ஆபரணங்களும் இருக்கின்றன. அவற்றை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு என்னை மன்னியுங்கள். அப்படி மன்னிக்க விருப்பம் இல்லை என்றால், மற்றொரு தட்டில் இருக்கும் உடைவாளை எடுத்து என்னை வெட்டி வீழ்த்தி உங்கள் மகனைக் கொன்றதற்கு பழி தீர்த்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள்..” என்று தனது கிரீடத்தை கழற்றி மந்திரியிடம் கொடுத்து இந்த பெற்றோர் முன்பு மண்டியிட்டு அமர்ந்தான் அரசன். உடன் வந்த காவலர்களுக்கும் மந்திரி பிரதானிகளும் நடப்பதை பார்த்து திகைத்துப் போய் நின்றனர். அந்த விறகுவெட்டி நம் மன்னனை வெட்டிவிட்டால் என்ன செய்வது? மக்களுக்கும் மகாராணியாருக்கும் என்ன பதில் சொல்வது… செய்வதறியாது திகைத்துப் போய் நின்றனர். சில நிமிடங்கள் மௌனத்திற்கு பிறகு விறகுவெட்டி பேச ஆரம்பித்தான்…. “ஒன்று நான் இந்த ஆபரணங்களையும் பொற்காசுகளையும் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளவேண்டும். அல்லது மன்னரை கொல்ல வேண்டும்… அப்படித்தானே…? நான் எதைச் செய்யப் போகிறேன் என்று அறிந்துகொள்ள அனைவரும் படபடப்புடன் காத்திருக்கிறீர்கள் சரி தானே? நான் விரும்புவது இந்த பொற்காசுகளையோ ஆபரணங்களையோ அல்ல… என் மகனே போய்விட்டபிறகு இவற்றை வைத்து நான் என்ன செய்யப்போகிறேன்..?” “ஐயோ அப்படியென்றால் இவன் மன்னரை கொல்லப்போகிறான் போலிருக்கிறதே…” எல்லாரும் வெடவெடத்து போனார்கள். விறகுவெட்டி தொடர்ந்தான்… “நீங்கள் நினைப்பது போல நான் மன்னரைக் கொல்ல விரும்பவில்லை. அவர் அளிக்கும் பொன்பொருளையும் விரும்பவில்லை. நான் விரும்பியது எதுவோ அது கிடைத்துவிட்டது. தான் செய்த தவறு குறித்து மன்னர் மனம்வருந்தவேண்டும் என்று விரும்பினேன். அவரோ வருந்திக் கண்ணீர் விட்டதோடு பெருந்தன்மையாக தனது உயிரையும் பதிலுக்கு தியாகம் செய்ய துணிந்துவிட்டார். அது ஒன்றே எனக்கு போதும். மன்னரை தண்டிப்பதால் என் மகன் எனக்கு மீண்டும் கிடைக்கப்போவதில்லை. ஆனால், இந்த நாடு ஒரு நல்ல மன்னனை இழந்துவிடும். நான் அப்படி செய்தால் என் மகனின் ஆன்மாவே என்னை மன்னிக்காது. அதே நேரம் நான் பொன்னையும் பொருளையும் பெற்றுக்கொண்டால் என் மகனின் உயிருக்கு நான் விலைபேசியது போலாகிவிடும். மன்னர் தான் செய்த தவறுக்கு உளப்பூர்வமாக மனம் வருந்தி சிந்திய கண்ணீரே போதுமானது… எங்களுக்கு வேறு எதுவும் வேண்டாம்” என்று கூறி தன் மனைவியை அழைத்துக்கொண்டு தன் வழியே போய்விட்டான் விறகுவெட்டி. ஒரு விறகுவெட்டிக்கு இப்படி ஒரு பெருந்தன்மையா, இப்படி ஒரு ஞானமா என்று வியந்துபோனார்கள் அனைவரும்.
