Certain trains in Indian railways follows a circuitous route due to technical reasons such as rocky terrain soil density soil erosion steep rocky range etc. google floods one with lots of information of such routes .

The picture above is one of such circuitous route between Madgaon and Belagavi formerly known as Belgaum.
