Self-evaluation time. Kindly share what is the level of your saree draping abilities?
Why is it so? : )
Who were your teachers of this art form?
Do you need a mirror? Full length? : )

If you are at a loss for words, here are some to choose from:

My skill level would be "work in progress." That does not mean I am still improving. No... I have plateaued in this feminine skill.

Work in Progress means when any of my cousins, sisters-in-law or friend see me in a saree, they just have to reach out and make a few adjustments. : ) So, it is always a work in progress. I wear it basically like my mother used to. Most people are simply happy if I take the efforts to wear a saree, so they ignore any flaws in the appearance.

My skill level would be between beginner and amateur. I can never get this right esp the left one which goes over the shoulder plus I'm uncomfortable carrying this heavy baggage kind on my body but I get lots of compliments that it suits me so I hide all the emotions and carry on.

I don't know about which category I can come under your mentioned list but I look good in a saree. I don't have any gurus. I remember when I needed to attend a job interview and for that I practiced it at home everyday till that interview. No, I don't need a mirror for wearing saree and I just check it after wearing it only.

I wear a saree only about once every 3 years on my trips back to India, so my skills count as less than zero. I shamelessly mooch saree and blouse from mom, aunt or SIL and then just stand there while they drape it on me. My SIL in particular has an amazing collection of designer blouses and she’s very generous letting me raid her closet. :grimacing:

Proficient- I look forward the occasion here in US to wear sarees. I feel nice when I wear one.
I didn`t need a mirror, but I usually check at the end!

I would rate myself as Skillful

I Do fb live programs every week ((related to tamil and Hinduism) and that calls me to wear sarees every week
Hence in the last one year have matured enough to drape sarees quiet well
I must admit that it involves a little prep work where the shoulder pleats are placed , aligned , pressed and pinned well ahead ..

so if that is done it just takes me 45-60 seconds to drape it well!

Never mind the discussion/debate in a language different from English. Look at the way saree draped perfectly.

I do remember learning draping saree forum my mom when I was nine or so. I was near perfect in draping saree at my 12 in traditional and non traditional. I learnt to were saree in all its glory for Tamil dramas in school and engineering college days. Unfortunately I had no cameras during those days - 1955 & 1964 and hence no way to prove and cherish it now in black and white.
Every new saree made of silk or any other material my mother buys or gets, she & my sister would insist that I wear/drape it first.
    Thanks for nostalgia.
