In a recent thread "Trip with Acquaintances" @Vedhavalli describes five friends who want to get away from their families and go off into the woods, 4 hr dive away, and stay in some AirB&B, with nearest shop or restaurant 30 min away. Unfortunately each one of the guys know that they cannot ask their wives to stay home and mind the nest, while they take that break. Especially after a year-plus of covid-lockdown misery. And besides, some of the wives on this multi-family overnighter do not even know each other, and for just a one night stand, in a manner of adjusting to strangers, would get hassled a lot and come out of it totally frazzled. But the husbands do not have the gumption for honest communication to suggest to their wives to stay home and avoid the hassle. Instead they had each engaged in a game where the wives would attempt to organize the outing, get peeved at one another, and drop out of the trip on their own.

An famous Christmas story by O'Henry often comes up in children's books in America. However one of the lessons of the story is never explained to the children. "For the love of god.... ask the person whether or not they want it before you go and sacrifice a lot to get them the whatever". Such children grow up and imagine whatever they tolerate in doing a favor to their spouses would always be a good thing [following paragraphs are from wikipedia]

"The Gift of the Magi" is a short story by O. Henry first published in 1905. The story tells of a young husband and wife and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money. As a sentimental story with a moral lesson about gift-giving, it has been popular for adaptation, especially for presentation at Christmas time. The plot and its twist ending are well-known, and the ending is generally considered an example of comic irony.

On Christmas Eve, Della Young discovers that she has only $1.87 to buy a present for her husband Jim. She visits the nearby shop of a hairdresser, Madame Sofronie, who buys Della's long hair for $20. Della then uses the money to buy a platinum pocket watch chain for Jim. When Jim comes home from work that evening, Della admits to him that she sold her hair to buy him the chain. Jim gives Della her present-- a set of ornamental combs, which she will be unable to use until her hair grows back out. Della gives Jim the watch chain, and he tells her that he sold the watch to buy the combs.

The Buddha wisdoms in the post there make me nostalgic for my Hindi textbooks that had poems and dohas (couplets ?) at the end. In the airbnb trip, we could bring some printouts of dohas by Kabir Das or Rahim and go around in a circle with each person giving their interpretation of the doha. : )

We mostly just drive to the entrance of the park, there will be a visitor map board. Sometimes some paper maps too. Pick a trail based on the energy levels. My kid has a way of downloading the trail map to the phone so it works where there is no network.

I’m not sure we even have a trail here forget a park with options that I can drive to. You are talking to that level of novice!

If we are hiking long distances, we stay in a hotel with good beds, a Starbucks nearby : )

That sounds like a better idea. I need to explore this option more. For someone like us traveling from out of state to a park, I wonder what a good starting park is. I was thinking of Smokey mountain. Thoughts?

Tell me about it! For the longest time we have had suites with two bathrooms and a door or some barrier in between the rooms, thanks to hotel points. We recently took a trip with a suite that doesn’t have a door nor a second bathroom. Never again! I didn’t want to have my kids in a different room. I could have had them with their dad in the suite and I could have enjoyed my own room

Had to call up a lawyer regarding a road accident case. He also said 500+ cases filed in the district seeking divorce post the 1st wave lockdown.

And now courts closed again due to the 2nd wave lockdown. Additional cooling period granted by nature(Wuhan lab).
