In 5 to 10 years I wish to visit India.

People I know who visited India got sick. One lady spent time in ER upon her USA arrival. Another lady had to be on wheelchair till she got well.

Please tell. How NOT to get sick when visiting India.

    1.Wash your hands religiously
2.Don’t eat any food that hasn’t been thoroughly cooked
    3. Same goes for not eating fruits, salads, lassi, yogurt etc outside
    4. Drink only bottled water and carry ample supplies while traveling
    5. Ask your doctor about getting a hepatitis A shot before traveling as well as any other preventatives
These are basic precautions. They will help to a good extent but some people still end up falling sick.

Falling sick while travelling to any country depends on a person's total immunity. If we follow all hygienic habits and careful about what we eat and drink one can have a trouble free visit.

The difference some get sick is they are visiting India vs visiting family.
Who visits family stay in home eat home made food and if they eat also they know where to eat and they already eating spicy food and not big variation of diet when they visit their family.
A tourist don’t know some things like drinking bottled water, their tummy suddenly can’t digest, or give some allergic reaction for continued eating of food with chilies, strong spices,
Stay at home vs hotel also matter hygiene perspective.

What about food given to tourist groups? I may go on a tourist group, such as Maharajah Express.

    Yes, those shots.

Of course, wash your hands, sing happy birthday

    Of course.

See, it is unlikely I will visit relatives. They are relatives. I am considering tourist group, preferably all-ladies tourist group.

If you’re traveling with a group then ask them about their food practices.
