Wear Saree To Office In Usa

I wear saree to work occasionally (once or twice a semester). Nothing special, just whenever I feel like. I prefer simple, silk sarees (I have a few of my mom's old pure silk sarees that I love). I also wear cotton or chiffon sarees. I use a safety pin to attach my saree to the blouse and it keeps saree in place (no midriff showing).

I wear long kurtas and salwar once a month-ish so my colleagues are used to seeing me in ethnic wear. No one asks me anymore if it is a special day in India. However, I can't work very well in a saree so I wear only when either I have a bunch of meetings or I am only going to teach and then be in my office (no lab work).

Oh, I am a university professor in the USA and most of my colleagues are white, men. They are very decent people . I haven't worn ethnic clothes at a conference or any diverse event (I do wear sarees to award banquets etc).

India has a rich culture, enjoy at home and among family and friends. Selvar on the other hand is different from saree. By any yard stick a woman wearing a Saree with a Bindi on her face looks beautiful, decent and even sexy too.

It is my personal opinion - At work place, unless you want to be different, don’t show how you're different. If you do, then be prepared for the consequences and don’t complain.

These days there are so many ethics trainings at work place, so one has to be careful when giving comments about somebody's dressing or looks. It can be even taken to HR if the other person complains. We had Diwali party at our office recently and everybody was very careful in openly commenting about sarees as most women wore sarees.
