Hello ! Today marks the 12th day after death ceremony of FIL . What are the rules for performing pooja and visiting temples . I understand that no festivals and major pooja / vraths should be performed , however there is a lot of ambiguity about whether lighting a Diya is allowed or not. DH’s family says they don’t light diya’s too for an year until the anniversary.
Please throw some light if you happen to know anything about it.

    TIA

Best is to follow your DH's side rituals at this time.

And yes, for 1yr till the1st death anniversary is performed, you are not supposed to celebrate any festivals or occasions nor do any poojas at home.

However, daily lighting of lamp in your puja room can be continued.

Thanks for your response. Do I have to clean the portraits of gods and goddesses and start lighting Diya’s again.

It depends from family to family. We do lit Diya's once all the ceremonies are over. However we dont celebrate functions or attend functions for an year. You can ask some elderly people who knows your specific religious tradition and follow the same.
