After a year long struggle she was so happy and in top of her world after seeing those 2 pink lines in HPT. Her plight with her people started from that day. Whatever she had to eat has to be approved her in-laws as some food may cause heat , some food may cause cold. She was not able to eat what ever she was craving for. On top of this her MIL came up with a regime for the baby to be born fair.

She was advised to have saffron strands with milk daily night, then pomegranate daily. She was told to avoid dates as they will make baby dark. She followed everything they said without any happiness. All she was concerned about was a healthy baby. She was not at all concerned about the color of the baby. After all he/she is her blood and flesh. She was least bothered of these superstitions but did not find an escape route to it.

The day arrived, it was her scan day and it was almost 10 days before the due date. Scan said her waters are very less and baby is about to/may defecate inside. Doctor told her to get admitted that very day and started with induction procedures. She did not get much pain to proceed to labor. By this time the baby was stressed out and she was rushed to OT for emergency C-Sec. On hearing that normal delivery was not likely to happen, her MIL started taunting her son " For this reason only I was telling her to do lots of work but you took care of her like a queen. See now what happened. She is not able to deliver normally". How bad there mentality is? I questioned myself.

Nurse came out with a little bundle in arms swaddled up. The proud father had tears of joy in his eyes on seeing that tiny little bundle of joy. He asked the nurse "What baby?". She said see for yourself and handed over the baby to him. Everyone were eagerly waiting for the moment. He unwrapped the baby. Tada "It was a Baby Boy". MIL was overjoyed as she always dreamt of having a boy grandchild in first place. So here come the next question " What is the color of the baby?". Answer is "Oohh he is so dark. How come he is so dark? Both parents are fair. She also had saffron with milk, lots of pomegranate. May be they swapped the baby inside. Let us check with the doctor if some mis-happenings had happened inside." Like this so much of backbiting was mongering within relatives.

Everyone who was informed about the baby's arrival, had first question as "what baby?" second is "What color is the baby? Is he fair or dark?". The mother was in total havoc as to why these people are behaving like this. He has made entry into this world only few hours before. From the time he was born he is a subject of discussion in everyone's mouth and everyone is judging him based on his color. How insane these people are?

She made a vow to herself as whatever discrimination people throw on her son, she would be the first one to protect him, stand for him and uplift him in all means in this cruel racist world. She looked at her son with love and that love was reciprocated by her son's smile.

I wish there were a sad button to click on. It seems to be so futile even to comment on the attitude of these people! Nothing seems to change.

Thanks @satchitananda for the reply. It is indeed a pain to motherhood. Hope at least next generation will be out of this racism.

So true. Painful for a mother. As a mother she will protect her child from these discriminatory talks. Let the mother enjoy her motherhood happily with her baby.

Please forgive me for being a bit pedantic, but this - a family discriminating against its own - is not "racism", by definition. Some alternatives are skin color preference, fair-skin preference, light skin obsession and so on. I agree that these are cumbersome terms. "Colorism" is an inelegant word that is also gaining traction.
When discussing difficult social issues, it is useful to be careful with words.

So true. In south american countries and Carribean, they openly say " improve your race"
meaning marry a lighter skin and have lighter skin babies.
In India, all is lost and hands thrown up in despair if one has a dark baby girl....
If one has a boy, then one is asked gora hai ya nahi...
Who says India mei color politics nahi hai..even my husband said that he got so so so gora after living in cold North East..

Fairness creams sell like hot cakes in our country. We are more fixated with fairness than whites. See how many queries for fair skinned brides are there in matrimonials.

Oh! this obsession towards fair skin! There are so many children out there, whose confidence was shaken by those relatives comparing them with their own siblings or cousins, instilling in them an inferiority complex which worsens when they enter the marriage market!
