I cleaned out my Indian clothes closet recently and found several saris, ghagras and salwar-kameezes that I do not want. Some have never been worn.

Any ideas on what to do with them?

How do you get rid of your unwanted desi clothes?

The good (but impractical) thing to do would be to take it to India and donate to charity.

But I know of an acquaintance who had a garage sale of only Indian clothes in HER SISTER's house (different city), and sold everything at half price. Made a tidy sum. And nope, she did not donate any of that said amount to charity! :tonguewink:

    Hello,

Usually, we take it our village and give it to our farm workers. City maids are No longer accepting cloths, prefer cash instead.

If they are silk sarees, mom would use them, daily.

I noticed that in abroad expansive dresses/sarees are sold online as gently used category.

    1. Take to india and give away. I've had no issues personally - my maids are thrilled to receive good, never used sarees.
    2. Cash back discounts - In India there are silk kabadiwallas - i.e they accept your unwanted silk sarees and give you cash. Even popular saree stores do this - they take gently used silk sarees and give you a cash discount on any new purchases at the store.
    3. Repurpose and reuse - you could reuse the material to create traditional ghagras, kanjivaram silk pattu-pavadai (silk skirts) for little girls in your family.
    4. Patch-work quilts (this would require you to cut up material) and material for doll clothes
    5. Garage sale/give-aways - put them in a box and let whoever wants it take it
    6. Save it for plays and school skits/costume dramas. You never know when your kids might need something like that.

    1. Donate to Charity organizations.
    2. If you can carry, then take to India and donate there.

If you have never worn clothes, then why don't you show those dresses/sarees to your friends. They can take if they like.

Give away on craigslist. I don't care if they reuse or resell. No space ever in my bags when going to India.

One time an American woman came and picked them up, and she was ooh'ing and aah'ing over the designs and colors. I wanted her gone (get nervous with craigslist transactions on home terrain), and she hung around and told me her plans for each piece. : )

Why don't you turn them into something else? Like the saris can be re-tailored into salwar kameez and kurtis etc.
