Hey VjVid, When I went to US i had some silver lamps in my hand luggage. The security at Frankfurt asked me to unwrap each one of the bindings and then show it to them. They even questioned me for 5 mins on the sharpness of the edges. Was able to convince them saying it is for religious purposes and showed the other pooja materials that i had with me like silver cups. Just sharing my experience...

Thanks Oliveoyl! this is the exact reason y am havng second thoughts to carry silver items on carry on. But on the other hand not comfortable enough to put it in check in and keep worrying about it the entire journey. May be once i get in to the mode of packing and the route of the travel is known i will deicde where to place it. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thanks Ladies, for sharing these tips!

Has anybody brought their big silver kuthu vilakku? Since it is big it will not fit into a sombu or anything. Would just wrapping it be enough? Also, do you declare such items and pay money for those?

I have brought smaller vilakku well-wrapped in hand luggage. I would never put anything valuable into checked bags. If the value is over the allowed limit then I would declare it, since they can estimate the value if they decide to check.

If they are over the allowed exemption then yes.
