    Hi All

Breastfeeding is a natural activity which everyone tries to learn but still i'm not able to breastfeed-please help me. In chennai where i live i'm sure that there are no lactation consultants and every mother does successfully breastfeed her child...but somehow i'm still not able to do...Experienced mothers and others who have had difficulties and could successfully breastfeed their babies...please give me advices and help me...

I'm currently in US and travelling outside is out of my reach...So i'm unable to go to lactation consultants...

I had a C-Section and my baby weighed 5lbs 10 oz when he was born. Everyone told he is a small weight baby. He had temp drops and so he was kept in the nursery for the initial days...And from birth he was given formula in the nursery. Since my baby did not breastfeed i was given a breastpump in the hospital to produce milk...After coming home, i used to try offering mybreast but i had difficulties..Since he was already less weight, even i did not want to risk and i was not sure if he was getting breastmilk. So i started offering formula...But i rented a breastpump from hospital and i'm pumping and giving it.

Now and then i used to put him to breastfeed...But of late he is refusing to suck my breast...I would not be able to rent for a longer duration. Whatever milk i'm producing-less or more...i want him to get it from my breast.

Pleae help me in having my son to breastfeed.

Thanks and waiting for your suggestions...Chitvishji, Varlooji and all others...please give me advices

My son was very sleepy in the initial few weeks and offering him milk from bottle itself was a very big task. He hardly takes milk even now....he eats very less milk in a day and doesn't have any particular schedule...Sine he has been putting on weight, the doctor is ok with it...
Please let me know how to breast feed my son...

Hi Blossom, I am a fairly new mother and I struggled initially with BFing also. Let me tell you one thing from my own experience, people do say BFing is a natural thing and it should come automatically, but trust me, no matter what people say or the books say, IT'S NOT TRUE!! Both mom and the baby has to learn this art and it is a struggle.

First things first, you wrote that you are in US right now, did you try to find an LC in your area? Ask your baby's current pedi if he/she can recommend somebody. LCs are really good and if you can't go out, they will come to you. Secondly, contact your County's health office (check the phone book), and they should send somebody to you for free of cost. What about your doctor in US? Thirdly, there's a BFing support group in US called La Leche League, and they are SO helpful with breastfeeding and if you call them and explain your situation, they may come to you and help you out. I don't know where you live in US, but here's their website LLLUSA. There's a phone number, so call them.

Don't worry, and don't listen to people who try to put you down by saying your baby is or was too small, or you are not a good mother because you can't figure out BFing. It takes time, and since your baby was put on a bottle, he maybe having 'nipple confusion'. So try these resources, and see if you get help.

    Don't give up hope. (((Hugs)))

It could be nipple confusion. Please contact Lactation consultants ,they would have given u a list of phone numbers during ur hospital stay or Le leche League in ur area ,they will be able to help u out.Have u tried breast feeding ur baby when he is half asleep?I had to give formula for my baby too because of his jaundice.I still cannot get him to breastfeed when he is wide awake, but for night feedings and when he is half asleep he does not care.Even if u cannot breatfeed u can always pump and give ur milk so don't give up hope.I have a Medela Pump in style,I bought it from my LC and I pump atleast 2 times a day and I work full time I try to feed him at night and early mornings.Even if u cannot breastfeed u can pump and give ur precious milk, I know many moms who have exclusively pumped milk and fed their baby upto a year.Don't feel bad,I went through the same thing ,do not worry things will work out fine.

    Hi Blossom

Even i m a new mom, i too had lots of difficulties initially, i wud literaaly cry bcos i had nipple sore, and i found very difficult to pump/b.feed my baby.
I too had C-section, i was not producing milk immediately after delivery, i kept on pumping in hospital , i then expressed very very very little say 2 drops in hosptial.. Then after discharge, i rented a pump-medela double pump-electric. I kept pumping inspite of my soreness. It was tooooo painful, still i did looking at ur baby's face!!!!!!! He didnt latch on initially, i used to try try try...he will not wide open his mouth... But he drinks from bottle, so we got a nipple shield and he cud suck when i attach nipple shiled on my nipple.. Then slowly he started latching on me.......

So try using NIPPLE SHIELD....U can get in baby shops like babies r us..

hi, your problem is that your son got used to bottle nipples. it is easier for them to latch the bottle nipple. when you breastfeed him he finds it difficult to latch. the babies get confused between the bottle nipples and breast nipple. also check if you have inverted nipple. if so, you can get nipple shield in babies r us. another choice is you can pump your milk and bottle feed him. hope this will help you. good luck.

    hi blossom,
like evrybody said BF is an art and u got to learn it to do the right way(even if somebody is there to help u). My suggestion would be..if u dont mind to see some BF learning videos, as they give a more good idea to how to exactly do it. I am giving u an old link of videos, this mentions abt the mistakes to avoid while feeding. See if this can be helpful Breastfeeding.com's Video Archive and another one is babycenter's The best breastfeeding positions - BabyCenter
else if its too intrigueing then try to read the section abt BF in "What to expect during the first year". This gives couple of options to go about, like "nursing supplementer". This device has a container that holds the formula/expressed milk and thin tubing that the mother tapes to her nipple, so that when the baby latches on he gets the supplement/milk as well as any milk the mothers is producing.

    HI

Congratulations for your newborn baby. I also have a newborn (6week) old girl. Try pumping a lot and that would help, even though it might be little uncomfortable. But once your milk started to come more, then you can put the baby directly. I do have a similar situation and dont know how to put the baby on the breast initially and we had one nurse who came to my house and helped me thru initially. After that it was easier. You can also take more milk, add methi to your diet and above all try pumping more and ask for a lactation consulatnt in your hospital.. I havent tried Lelache club yet, but the nurse & the lactataion specialist was useful..

    Have an enjoyoble BFeeding..

Thanks a lot for your replies....My son is having cold and he is not drinking milk even from the bottles also. Here the doctor says that it will go on its own and they dont give any medicine except saline drops to clear the stuffy nose. He is suffering for more than a week and i hear the wheezing sound as well his noses stuffed up when he gets from sleep....Not sure what to do...Currently we have hard time feeding him from the bottle. Putting him to breastfeed is not working out...But atleast i wish he starts coming back to normal and consume the amount he was taking earlier..

Thanks all of them for your support and replies...
