"Cooking is no great deal," my dearest GrandMa said so ,
"Get the basics right and that is all that you need to know,"
"daily cooking is child's play," she said ,as she took out a measure,
of rice , puffed and pressed and cardamoms for the added flavour. .

I was a little girl and loved to hear the stories she spun ,
with ease she wove moral tales as the cooking was being done.
"Dear girl," she said ,"each act of mine has a message for you,
a lesson to learn ,tactfully adopt and then to cleverly follow too .

I asked her,"Pray what the rice puffed & pressed may mean to me?
"Life has its ups and downs, its a rollercoaster ride," said she ,
"inflated or deflated thou mood may be and it's a life well lead,
when you carry on unfazed and see you will find your goal ahead."

"Aha !" I said that's a good one & you 're a clever granma my dear,
You make me clean the rice and I understand it crisp & clear.
Your intention is to work and get the work done Ok !fine !
I shall do it willingly for you ,Oh ! dear granma of mine ."

"I looked upto her,I was so naive and innocent,
as she blend tales of the past and the present.
in syrupy threads of jaggery and loving words, sugar coated,
I looked at her in awe, with a feeling of an EGO fully bloated.

"The hot syrup and the cold rice teach you my dear, tolerance,
a firm grip and the urundais will be fine, you need a lil patience,
withstand the difficulties bravely ,"smilingly, she said ,
my little hands could not take the heat and so I sped ,

off to meet my friends and I had homework to be done ,
"Oh ! Ma's there to lend a helping hand and I shall have fun.
I shall draw and paint the cement floors white and red ,
I shall light the lamps, dear Granma, and help you," I said.

"May your life be illuminated now and forever, granchild of mine,
may your home glow and sparkle with cheer for you to be fine.
Be like a lamp, spread sunshine wherever you go ,
Fear not the darkness,an inner light will guide you so."

so she said, she is there above, her hands are still upon me,
the lesson from the bonding of the puffed rice and the jaggery,,
still echoes in my ears,"Thou art the richest and the happiest too,
when the bonding is jaggerystrong, and the expectations just a few.....":)

    Hi Chokkanayagi,

Yet another lovely post from you - so well written as nicely said by your grandma. How well she has conveyed life's messages with the making of pori urundai!

By referring to ur grandma, u made me nostalgic too my dear. I too remember with great respect my dear grandma (fondly called by all of us as manni). When we were in a joint family for quite a few years, it is by sheer observation of her activities that I grasped so many lessons of life. She is really great and not a festival passes by without remembering her.

Hats off da chellam for the lovely posts u give in this column. Am glad to be the first here with my fb though I have become quite irregular in IL attendance!
