    Dear All,
I am trilled by the " views" for this thread, last week - the no: has touched 535 ! I am not greedy to ask for more. This only shows, that I can "punish" you with proverbs every monday.

I consider sharing proverbs as a way of reviving tradiion. Since you all know now what a traditional "kattu potti", I am, I am going ahead.

Some proverbs use slightly " vulgar" words, but not unprintable, definitely. I am not changing them, for fear of the beauty of the proverb, being lost. I am giving a gist below, each. If you have a different interpretation, please write without hesitation and feel free to correct me - remember,my friends, I am not the ultimate, but far from it !

    Here we go !

You can define the character of a child when he or she is just five
The same way, we can judge the growth of a plant when it is very tender !

A bad workmanquarrels with his tools ! ( If I give the literal meaning, it is very likely, I will be shown the door ! )

    3 - ஆக்க அறியாவிட்டால் புளியைக் கரை
    அழகு இல்லாவிட்டால் மஞ்சளைப் பூசு

    If you do not know to cook, start using the tamarind;
If you are not good looking, use turmeric.

My beloved, you do not have to cook or do any chore, just sit beside me !

We offer to God even if it is uncooked or half cooked. But to the priest, we offer even worse than that !

A bad almanac always quotes bad times.

A lose woman happily dances her way around all her life; but prays for God's grace in her death bed.

This is so enjoyable, a translation will not do any justice !
So I am not doing it.

The religious box is so sacred. But, lo behold, what is kept on top of it - the non vegetarian food !

Who bothers whether the goldsmith's daughter is pretty or not ?

    11 - ஆசை அறுபது நாள்; மோகம் முப்பது நாள்
    தொண்ணூறு நாளும் போனால் துடப்பக் கட்டை அடி

    Love lasts for sixty days; lust for thirty days;
Once past ninety days, it is " beating with a broom stick" !

    Love cannot become relationship.
    Moral support cannot quest hunger.

Percussion to support dance; dance to suit the percussion

This is a pun with tamil words ! The side of a river is bank, what we get in our mind is guilt.

A boy-child has to be tamed, physically
A girl-child has to be brought up by praising her

A loose woman's husband will never come to her rescue.

If a woman does not rise up to the occasion, in life, is she just meant to be a beautiful doll ?

It is worth waiting for a tuesday in the month of Adi to have an oil bath
It is worth using turmeric powder when having a bath.

With the support of a husband, you can win the whole world.

Who is related to whom? Mother & son are (best) related !

    Dear Chithra,
it was so exciting to read so many proverbs. And more interesting was the conversation between 'young girls' like you and 'babies' like Shahana. Keep it going.
The proverb I like very much:
churanai ketta pondatti, chuvathu keeraiyai vazhichu podudi

    Nice Collections !

    Dear Chitra,

You have given us very good set of 20 proverbs, will try to memorise some of them and use them in my daily talks !

Btw, its unfair not to translate this proverb. I didn't get the meaning of it ! am curious to know what it means ? pls give me its meaning !

It's more interesting to read them when I understand the meaning of the proverb. I am hardly used to proverbs, so for almost everything I require explanations !

This proverb reminds me of our fight scenes at home :) If I annoy hubby and make him angry for some reason, he starts shouting, that time to gain sympathy will ask him with such a innocent expression "Enna paatha paavama illa" nu, he will angrily retard saying "90 days mudhinjipochu illa, so paatha paavama illa " nu  , but he wont be angry for long. If I maintain silence or sad face for long time, he will finally take pity (I always love him for this quality) and come back to normal and we will have more talk and fun to compensate for our silence during his moody minutes.

    Love,
    Preethi

    My dear Preethi !

You are as prompt as only you can be !

The one you have quoted, I can explain only vaguely:
Some are so distantly related that we say " he is a brother of my SIL;or an immediate brother of the maid who worked at home, etc !". Achaanukku peechaan is said just for fun.

    Love & regards,
    Chithra.

Me, naughty? my Seena Baby !

OK, now I will switch over to Serious Chitvish - will you be happy ?
I have given the meaning of 8 to Preethi.
9 is given in the post itself.
Can I be naughty in the proverb given below, atleast ?

    Love & regards,
    Chithra.

The lady has a stylish hairstyle & decked up with flowers.
But, what do you see inside? - lice & dandruff !!

    11th Proverb !

Yes Seena. my hubby uses the 11th proverb quite often, (Sometimes I apply the same proverb to him as well), we simply add up the days and "90 days" is the terminology we use jokingly to convey to each other that I don't love you !

For Proverb 8 , Chitra has already given the meaning ! 9 is not understanable for you ?

    Love,
    Preethi
