Urban love story Deepu. The lead actors are all new- Shiv Pandit and Manasi Parekh (both are not Tamilians). The film is cute and enjoyable too. You might like it ;-)

    Watched Mugamoodi yesterday.

Unless you are a fan of Myskkin’s style of filmmaking, chances are that you might not like this film. As for me, I did find it very, very interesting! :thumbsup

The movie has Myskkin’s stamp all over- simple yet powerful story line; slow moving scenes to arouse one’s curiosity; outcome of certain scenes revealed at a later stage; nonchalant dialogue delivery and effortless acting. Nevertheless, you really need to have the patience to appreciate each and every scene that Myskkin delivers in the film.

Like most of Myskkin’s other films (Chittiram Pesudathi, Anjaathey, Yuttham Sei) , Mugamoodi too has two separate stories going in parallel tracks only to meet one another at a bridge that forms the crux of the film. At one part, you have the kung-fu trained robbers (led by Narain) terrorizing the state with their swift robbery tactics and gruesome murders. Senior Police Officer Naseer together with his two assistants work hard to capture this group.

And at the other hand, you have Lee (Jeeva), a typical jobless youngster who loves kungfu. Lee learns the ancient martial art from his near-pauper Master (Selva) and that too, free of charge. In an effort to gain more students for his Master, Lee gets into trouble with some local fishmongers, which soon sees him being arrested and reprimanded by the police, all thanks to the interference of Shakthi who loathes the very sight of anyone breaking the law. Needless to say, Lee falls in love with Shakthi but the latter has nothing but bad impressions of Lee. Thus, in order to project and impress Shakthi with his “good side”, Lee disguises himself as a Superman and calls himself as “Mugamoodi”.

What started out as fun turns out to have serious implications on Lee’s life. During his stint as Mugamoodi, Lee inadvertently helped the police to capture one of the kungfu robbers, which then stirred a cat and mouse race between the dreaded group and the police. It was at this point of time that Naseer was wounded by one of the robbers, nevertheless circumstances were as such that Lee was blamed for it. Lee had no choice but to hide himself under the permanent guise of Mugamoodi to save himself. The rest of the film was how a normal youngster became a national masked hero when he begins to channel his strength and martial art talents in eradicating the bad guys.

Quite a normal story on paper but Myskkin brings the beauty of the film out through his characters and picturisations. The scene where Jeeva drops down crying after watching his friend’s funeral in the news, was superb and natural. And I also liked the fact that Myskkin didn’t waste much time with long, never-ending emotional scenes. He kept it very crisp and uneventful which made its mark to the audience. Narain is another actor to be watched out for. His cool handling of situations were amazing to watch. In the scene where he walks to Sundar’s home with the hammer tugged in his shoulder certainly oozes confidence and creepiness. The rest of the casts were just about apt.

One of the best scenes in the film is certainly the fight sequences. Jeeva and Narain has certainly trained very hard for the fight sequences and it shows. The street fight with the kungfu champion, the market fight and the final bridge fight were visually amazing to watch!

But Mugamoodi is not without its flaws. The characterization of Jeeva’s parents are too clichéd and Myskkin went overboard with the grandfather role. The part where the non-trained grandfather along with the tailor and his assistant gunning down the robbers in the climax, were totally ridiculous to watch.

Pooja Hegde- nothing great about her. What’s the need for a “beauty queen” to play this role when any young, pretty girl could have done the same role just as well, if not better?

Anyway, watch Mugamoodi if you are a Myskkin fan. You certainly need a lot of patience to watch the film as the story unravels slowly through layers of pages. It’s a beauty alright but still stop short of being considered magnificient!

Watched Hindi version of English Vinglish movie.

Sridevi looks so beautiful and most adorable, middle aged women. Hope, she acts more heroine centric movies.

Sridevi's family is putting her down because of her lack of English speaking skills. She came to NY alone to help her niece's wedding. In NY, she decided to learn English without telling anyone. The story goes, her venturing into the new world, becoming more confident woman and making all sort of friends, with various race/gender/age such as cook, cap driver, maid etc. Her family joins her for the wedding. She gives a speech in English about family/relationship (toast) at the wedding and surprises her family. The end.

What a comeback by Sridevi in 'English Vinglish'. It was a treat to watch her act - such beautiful display of emotions - hesitation, fear, control, resignation ... She was wise in choosing the script and did full justice with it. Special mention goes to a small and simple scene between her and AB (guest appearance) - they took a very very simple scene to an altogether different level. No wonder they are the real superstars. Good direction and choice of character artists too. Seems that the movie is a tribute to the shedding of 'silent tears' by women
worldwide in order to bind their family together and/or carve an identity for themselves. As Shashi (Sri) rightly sums it all by saying that 'she is not looking for love but respect'.
