TIPS FOR GETTING PREGNANT

Are you planning to get pregnant? Have you discussed with your husband and both of you think that it is time to prepare yourself for parenthood. Well then you need to prepare your body for motherhood. Need help for getting pregnant? Following are the tips that will help maximize your chances for conceiving and delivering a healthy baby.

• You need to do a through check up of your body which includes blood pressure, weight, chronic conditions such as diabetes, and many other factors which can affect your ability to carry and deliver a healthy baby.

• Your diet should be balanced and full of nutrients. That means a balanced diet complete with protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and a minimum of sweets and fats.

• Stop using all methods of birth control. If you are using contraceptive pills then stop them immediately in order to allow your body to conceive. Seems obvious, but some forms of birth control have more lasting effects than others. It is recommended that you continue taking the pills to the end of your current cycle before stopping the pills, and then start trying the next month. If you use condoms, a cervical cap, or a diaphragm, all you need to do is put them away.

• Know when you ovulate coz that's the time when you are most fertile and you can conceive. When ovulation occurs, your body produces a slippery, thin substance called cervical mucus to help facilitate the passage of sperm. Hence you need to examine yourself daily for a vaginal discharge that's transparent and stretchy between your fingers, like egg white, on your most fertile days. Know your cycle. If your cycle is 28 days long, that makes day 12-14 (counting from the first day of your last period) your most fertile day. But if you have a 30-day cycle, day 15-17 is the most fertile, and 32-dayers should go for it on day 18.

• For sex use missionary position a lot. Because his semen needs to go directly into your uterus and so positions like--man on top, doggy style, side-by-side--is okay, but please avoid woman on top, standing, or leaning positions, which discourage the flow of semen to the uterus.

• Take folic acid. Your body needs it to produce red blood cells, as well as norepinephrine and seratonin (chemical components of the nervous system). Folic acid is also one of the few nutrients known to prevent neural tube birth defects, such as spina bifida. These defects can occur in the foetus even before the mother knows she is pregnant.

• Your man needs to take care too. It is advisable that he wears loose pants and underwear because according to studies sperm count drops--sometimes drastically--when the testicles are constricted or overheated. Tell your partner to avoid hot tubs, saunas, and hundred-mile runs (hot showers and moderate exercise are okay).

• Quit smoking, drinking, and drugs.

Preconception Agenda

PRECONCEPTION AGENDA

You and your partner have decided to have a child. Well that's great news. But have you considered that parenthood is a huge responsibility. Do you think you are ready for it? Parenthood requires lot of commitment and sacrifice. You need to change your entire lifestyle in order to give yourself a healthy pregnancy and to have a healthy baby. Well don't fret. Consider the following points which will make you ready for parenthood.

Quit Partying and Night Outs:
The most important thing that you have to do is follow a schedule. No more partying for you. If you smoke and drink you will have to quit because smoking might lead to miscarriages, premature birth, and low-birth weight babies. Plus, research suggests that smoking can affect your fertility and lower your partner's sperm count. Passive smoking is also harmful and therefore if you go out for dinner or lunch always choose a non-smoking area.

Avoid Caffeine:
Too much coffee is bad for your health and baby during pregnancy because caffeine can reduce your ability to absorb iron which you need during pregnancy. Caffeine also increases the risk of stillbirth. If it is difficult to give up completely then cut it down to one cup a day.

Exercise Regularly
In order to conceive and have a healthy pregnancy it is very important that you get your weight in check. Obesity not only makes it difficult to conceive but also makes labor difficult. Start and stick to a fitness plan now, and you'll be rewarded with a healthy body that's fit for pregnancy. Talk to your Doctor about the best and safe way to achieve your weight goals.

Eat Healthy Food
To keep your weight in check you have to keep your taste buds in check too. Stock up your refrigerator with healthy food and say no to junk food. Try to get at least five servings a day of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as plenty of whole grains and foods that are high in calcium, vitamins and proteins.

Take Folic Acid
Your body needs Folic Acid to produce red blood cells, as well as norepinephrine and seratonin (chemical components of the nervous system). Folic acid is also one of the few nutrients known to prevent neural tube birth defects, such as spina bifida. It helps synthesize DNA and normalize brain function, and is a critical part of spinal fluid. Women who don't get enough folic acid may increase their chance of miscarriage. Before you conceive, you'd be wise to take a daily multivitamin containing at least 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid. Pregnant women will need at least 600 to 800 mcg daily.

Know your Fertility Time
Not all couples conceive as soon as they stop oral contraception and decide to become parents. It may take many cycles for conception to occur, even if both partners are normally fertile, healthy, fit and sexually active. What is important to conceive is knowing when is the best time to conceive and what is your fertility time. Thus you need to know when you ovulate. Most women ovulate in the middle of their menstrual cycle. If you want to be more exact, start charting your basal body temperature (BBT) and the changes in your cervical mucus. Tracking these symptoms over several months can help you figure out when you're ovulating during each cycle. The best bet is to have sex each alternate day from day 10 after your menstrual cycle.

Get a thorough Medical Check Up
By getting a medical check up you will be able to know as to whether your body is ready for parenthood or not. Get information about any medical history such as cancer, depression, miscarriage etc running in your family and get yourself diagnosed for it.

Toss your birth control
Once you've gotten yourself into baby-making shape, you're ready to bid adieu to birth control. If you have been taking pills then finish your current pack to avoid irregular bleeding and complications. It may take a few months for your cycle to return to normal, but many women are fertile the first month after they stop taking the Pill. If you're using Depo-Provera, it can take up to a year after your last shot for you to start ovulating again, even if your period returns to normal sooner. If you have been using condoms then what are you waiting for….go for it.

Food For Fertility

Food For Fertility

Just as it is necessary to know what is the best time to conceive and what is your fertility time it is also necessary to eat healthy and nutritious food to make your body healthy and fit to conceive. Encouraging fertility food is an essential step towards planning a healthy pregnancy and conceiving. A diet, which is rich of minerals and vitamins, is what you need to continue during planning to conceive and also throughout your pregnancy. Thus boost fibre-rich, low-fat vegetables and grains, and pass on fatty, cholesterol-laden meat and dairy products. It is well established that a vegetarian diet fosters weight loss, protects our heart and bones, and provides an abundance of cancer-fighting antioxidants and encourages fertility.

Food that will improve ovulation:

A surprising number of women lose their chance to conceive because they simply do not ovulate regularly. A change in diet may help. The power of vegetables, grains, fruits, and balanced diet is enormous and will help you ovulate and thus conceiving will be possible. Eliminating animal products and keeping vegetable oils low help you avoid dramatic swings in the amount of estrogens that will not be possible if you continue with fatty diet. The fibre in plant foods whisks excess estrogens safely out of the body. Thus have as much green leafy vegetables as possible, have lots of fruits and cut down on chocolates, sugar, oily food, dairy products and meat.

Dairy Products cause infertility:

Dairy products contain lactose, which must be broken down into two simple sugars-glucose and galactose - during digestion. Studies suggest that galactose is toxic to ovaries. Compounding the problem, some women have low levels of the enzyme needed to break apart this sugar, and galactose builds up dangerously. Thus skip the milk, ice cream, cottage cheese, and especially the yogurt, which is loaded with galactose. There is plenty of highly absorbable calcium in green leafy vegetables, beans, enriched flour, and fortified juices. Thus substitute your daily intake of calcium by consuming green leafy vegetable, beans and if required calcium supplements.

Balance your Hormone:
It is also necessary that you balance your hormone levels during conceiving. Following chart will help you balance your hormone levels.

Food Choices for Optimal Hormone Balance:

• Whole grains - pasta, rice, bread, cereal, oatmeal
• Vegetables - carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, cabbage, broccoli etc
• Legumes - chickpeas, lentils, peas, soybeans, black beans, other sprouts
• Fruits - apples, mangoes, bananas, peaches, pears

Avoid: Animal products (meat, eggs, and dairy), added oils, sugar and fatty foods.
