thanks pmahensa for your valuable suggestions.
i am almost 30 pounds overweight and trying to lose weight since a long time but in vain. only exercising is not helping me to lose weight. Just as you said, I also came to know that low carb diet combined with exercise is very effective for pcos.
So now i have reduced my rice intake which i should have done earlier. If you can share any advice on vegetarian low carb options please discuss some more.
Right now my diet includes milk with protein powder, egg, chapatis, veg curry, dal, fruits, salad(sometimes),limited rice.

    More ideas are always welcome,
    Thanks:thumbsup

    Some Ideas

Breakfast - Soy patties with cheese and double fiber bread
    - Scrambled eggs with veggies and cheese
    - low sugar soy milk
    avoid milk at breakfast

Snacks - Rice protein powder shake, whey protein powder shake, spiced buttermilk with handful of almonds. check carb vs protein content of shake to make sure there is more protein than carbs. I like the pure protein shakes you can buy at traders joes.

for lunch/dinner - mission makes these excellent low carb tortillas - can buy at safeway. fill 1/3rd of your plate with veggies, 1/3rd with some protein such as paneer, soya, beans, eggs, chicken, cottage cheese etc and the last 1/3rd with healthy whole grain carbs such as whole wheat bread, brown rice etc.

for dessert - dreyers makes yummy no sugar added fruit bars - only 30 calories each - found at safeway. or kozy shack makes this no sugar added rice pudding - found at trader's joe

what really helps me is eating protein at every meal. it helps curb hunger and also prevents carb induced laziness :)

my meals today so far - I think this has a good balance of protein and carbs

breakfast - cup of soymilk with 2 slices whole wheat double fiber bread smeared with cottage cheese and a spoon of low sugar jam

    snack - handful of almonds

lunch - 3 corn tacos filled with fat free refried beans, tomatoes, onion, salsa and shredded cheese

My 2 cents on reducing weight.

    - Increase intake of calcium (low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt, cheese)
    - Increase intake of leafy green vegetables (spinach, amaranth, methi)
    - Eat complex carbs (oats, bran, broken wheat, whole wheat flour chapathis etc)
    - More fruits and vegetables (make it atleast 5 servings every day) - you may want to avoid high card veggies and fruits for the time being.
    - Exercise regularly (bike or walk)
    - Drink atleast 2 litres of water

You will be able to shed-off your weight quickly. I put on 28lbs when my daughter was born and reduced my weight within 6 months.

    Thank you Uma.
I have increased my milk intake(fat free), I drink twice daily.
Loosing 28 pounds in 6 months is really great.
I am hoping to lose atleast 10-15 pounds in the next 6 months. Lets hope that i can also be there!!

    Hi SS,

Another thing that I forgot to mention is, increase your fibre intake. This means you will have to include a lots of fibre rich veggies and fruits and whole grains in your diet. I never went for workout during those 6 months, it was just adjusting food pattern and drinking lot of water. Cut down a lot on starchy food (rice especially). Oats is the best fibre-rich, protein-rich complex carb that helps you in weight loss. Try eating an apple a day (which will take care of most of the fibre needs).

    Thanks Uma.
I have increased fruits in my diet.
Cutting down on white rice is the major change in my diet. So trying to adjust to it now a days.
Having 2 chapatis per day is fine for me but if i have more then it produces heat in my body and also get constipated(especially when I eat chapatis made from atta at home).
Somehow the chapatis which I get from costco are good for me.Just dunno the reason.
So am trying to balance with min chapatis and min rice and lot of water.
It is very nice to have support here.:)

    Hi Sunshinecheer,

Well, just a heads up to be very careful when you get pregnant since PCOS pregnancies are high risk. So make sure your obg/gyn is an person who understands the disease 100%. There are tons of scammer doctors who just want your insurance money but will not give you good service :)

I've learned this the hard way. Just something to keep in mind for long term.

    Take care....

    Thanks Sanjitha,

I did go to fertility specialist for almost 4-5 months, but it did not turn out to be useful for me. They diagnosed me with Anovulation, put me on clomid for 2 cycles, still no ovulation. Then they suggested IVF, it was all too much for us to take, so we stopped the treatments now. Just focusing on losing weight . Successfully lost 18 lbs now in 6 months by changing dietary habits and exercise. 10 more pounds to lose to look normal again.:)

    Hoping for the best,
    SS
