Temple architecture in Kerala
<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" />Temple architecture in Kerala is different from that of other regions in India. Largely dictated by the geography of the region that abounds in forests blessed with the bounties of the monsoons, the structure of the temples in Kerala is distinctive. The roofs are steep and pointed, and covered with copper sheets. The Kerala roof resembles those found in the Himalayan regions and those in East Asia.
The shape of the roof is in accordance with the plan of the sanctum below. With a circular plan, one sees a conical roof, while with a square plan the roof is pyramidal. The roof is constructed with wood and is covered with copper plates. Most of the temples seen in Kerala today, have undergone several phases of renovation, given the perishable nature of the construction materials.
The central sanctum of a Keralite temple is referred to as the Sree Kovil. It is surrounded by a cloistered prakara, pierced at one or more cardinal points with a gopuradwara. The cloistered prakaram has a namaskara mandapam located directly in front of the sanctum. This prakaram also houses subsidiary shrines. A kitchen is located in the south eastern corner of ths cloistered prakaram. The mukha mandapam is integrated with the gopura entrance. The flagstaff or dwaja stambham is located outside of the dwajastambham. The balipitham may be located in the mukhamandapam or in the outer courtyard. The outer prakaram or courtyard houses other subshrines, and optionally a temple tank.
The Kuttambalam or the theater hall of the Keralite temple is located either as a part of the inner prakara, on the south east corner facing north, or as a separate hall outside the innermost prakaram, either facing into the temple or facing north. This has a stage, raised from the rest of the floor, and a backstage area. This is the site of the performance of Kathakali or Chakkiyar koothu recitals. Thus the kuttambalam plays a role in educating visitors on the rich legends of the Indian cultural fabric.
The Keralite temple is an amalgam of stonework, wood work, stucco work and painting - harmoniously blended into a structure vibrant with traditions of the region. The wood work here is of great importance, and it gives the essential verve and character to the Kerala temple silhouette. The inner skeletal framework of the temple is of wood, although the base and the structure above are of granite and laterite respectively. The roof projects out at several levels, in order to protect the inner skeletal framework from the vigorous monsoons that inundate the region.
The Kerala temple walls are of coursed laterite stone masonry plastered in mud and lime. Murals are seen on several of these temple walls.
Another distictive feature of Keralite temples is the use of vilakku maadam, or the multi-tiered brass lamps in front of temples. Lakshadeepam is a spectacular celebration of traditional lighting where tiers of small oil lamps lining the outer walls of the inner prakaram are lit.
Temples have held an important place in the life of Keralites. Several temples in Kerala trace their origins to antiquity. However, they were renovated frequently and the current structures that are seen are vastly a result of the numerous renovations.

Hi epics,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, there will be a large queue of children and their relatives at Panachikkad temple and the roads leading to the temple on the Vijayadasami day. Due to heavy rush, many devotees visit the temple on other days for worship.

I have visited this temple twice with my daughter before her Vidyarambham last year. We would like to visit the temple again before she go to LKG next year.

Hi Ilites,

There is a temple at Thiruvidhankunnu Madhavu (Bhagavathi temple) on the way to kozhikode. Mangalya poojas are performed on every sunday, tuesday and friday. These poojas have to be performed thrice (once a year) by the bride/groom. They distribute pooja prasadams and also do annadanam.
Its believed taht performing Mangalya puja here removes the doshas associated with marriage.

This mangalya puja is believed to be very powerful and definitely the bride/groom's marriage will be finalized.
Lots of Keralites believe this. On an average 75-100 people participate in each puja.

I just came across this thread today. Very nice Manju!

I would like to add:

Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja temple
Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple official website

Of all the places of Serpent worship in the world, there is none that is more benign, awe-inspiring and legendary than Mannarasala, as blessed and envisaged by Lord Parasurama, the creator of Kerala.
The temple has over 30,000 images of snakes along the paths and among the trees, and is the largest such temple in Kerala.

This is one rare temples where the puja pattern is headed by a Brahmin lady.

Women seeking fertility come to worship here, and upon the birth of their child come to hold thanksgiving ceremonies here, often bringing new snake images as offerings.

Hi Mythili,

Mannarsala Nagaraja Temple is very close to my husband's place, about 2 kms from his home... His home has a 'Sarpa Kavu' also, which was renovated 3 years back. Also, since my Nakshitram is Ayilyam, I go to the temple when ever I can... Visited many number of times since childhood...

A very famous temple, dedicated to Nagaraja. Poojas are performed by the elder Brahmin lady who is married into the Mannarsala Illam.

Thanks Mythili, for posting about this temple.

I am attaching some photos of the temple.

Dear Manju,
i started a thread on the temples I visited in kerala sometime back. I did not continue fr lack of support, only keralites would have been interested. I am happy to see that you have posted info aboout many temples. Thanks a lot. I would like to add some info.
Chottanikkara Bhagavathy is said to be in the form of Moogambika in the mornings-this is to appease Adi Sankara (Devi was to accompany him to this place, but as Jagadguru looked behind against her command she stayed in Moogambi).
My savior is Sri ettumanoorappan. My son is epilaptic and he used to get fits every week almost. I was running from pillar to post to find a good physician, all the ones I went to could not do anything for him. While I was travelling to Ernakulam to my mother's house, a co passenger told me that I should pray to Sri Ettumanoorappan to help me and should submit rope (for drawing water from the well for pooja and other purposes) to the Lord. Only condition was the prayer should be fulfilled as soon as possible- no delay is liked by the Lord. I immediately prayed to the Lord. I could not go to that temple just then because my MIL had expired just the month before. After completion on one year, I went to the temple along with my siblings and offered the rope and also I did the 'adima kidathal' (giving the child away to the temple and then taking him back after offering money for him) also. I got to see a good doctor who helped me and his problem slowly and gradually stopped. He had so many other problems along with that and he overcame all that. Now he is in the Plus 1, after passing the 10th with 77% marks. I am so much devoted to the Lord that I try to visit the temple whenever I visit Ernakulam. HE is the one who gave my son back to me.
And it is so very auspicious to visit all the three Shiva temples-Ettumanoor, Vaikom and Kadunthuruthi together.
Vaikom temple is famous for the Vaikom Satyagraham-to allow all castes into the temple- which was done by the Periyar of Tamil Nadu.
Sri Poornathrayeesa is aa divine sight to behold-adorned with pink lotus flowers. I have visited and prayed in that temple many times. the Lord is Santhana Gopala- there is a big painting depicting the Lord with lots of children around and on him.
I have also been lucky enough to visit the temples of Rama,Lakshmana, Bharatha and Shathrugna the same day.
And in Trivandrum, it is auspicious to visit Thiruvallam, then Thiruvananthapuram Padmanabha and then Thripadapuram. the Lord is supposed to have given darshan to the sage as a very large one and since he was not able to see the Lord fully and on his request, the Lord made himself into a smaller version. Till 2002, the deity was in stone like structure. In the Jan.2002, while the temple was being made ready for the Lakshadeepam, they found out that the deity was in gold. The outer layer was done to protect the idol from invaders. Now the Lord shimmers in gold and to have a darshan in the oil lamps is janma sabhalyam.
Other details in next post.
