    Hi,

I have been ttc for the last 2 years. Have taken 4 clomid cycles upto 150mg, 1 failed iui cycle. This month the clomid did not work on me at all, hence, I have started my provera to induce periods. I have my first appointment with a fertility specialist on monday. I was wondering if any of you ladies have been to a fertility specialist, and, what should I expect during my first visit. Also, what tests are normally run by them?

I know I am asking too many questions, sorry.........

This is my experience with fertility specilist.

He try to understand basic information like if your periods were nornal,at what age your period started, if you ever had any STD, are you taking any medicine right now. He will also ask DH if he has any medical history.

Then he will check your existing reports. If you do not have all the reports then he may ask you take missing tests.
If you already have all the reports then based on these reports he will suggest future course of treatment. He may suggest you two threee different options and would ask you think over it and choose what treatment you would like to undergo (i.e. lap or direct iui or iui with injectible or ivf)

Doctor will also discuss about genetic testing (based on race i.e. for aisians they ask if you would like to check if you are thalassemia carrier)

Finally he will ask if you have any questions and would discuss that.

I went to a fertility specialist and one of the first things he asked me to do was to fill in a bunch of forms which gather as much history as possible about all your health conditions.
Also, there was the option of choosing to ask him any questions related to our sexual life which we did.

In my experience with the doctor that I went to, he took the time to explain completely to me as to what might be causing my condition (I used to have irregular periods, and he asked me to do a bunch of blood tests and finally found out that I was insulin resistant. He put me on Metformin and asked me to TTC for 3 months with just that and I did). But on my first visit, he explained fully to me what could be the causes of my problem and I asked about all the different possibilities there are in case pregnancy did not occur naturally. Also, my doctor did not want me to directly take fertility aids and told me that we could gradually increase the more invasive methods if nothing happened with the milder methods. I found that as and when the doctor explained things to me, questions kept popping up in our minds and he encouraged us to stop him and ask him anything that we were doubtful about.

    Hello

I visited a fertility specialist a few weeks back. First they sent me a big booklet of questionnaire. this is basically to understand your medicl and family history. It has all questions related to your menstruation cycle, family health history, your husband health history etc. They encourage your DH to accompany you for your initial consultation.

Then the doctor asked me about the past treatments, medications I had taken, the number of cycles I took clomid,my HSG results, my husband's SA report.

She breifly explained the options that we have and given our insurance coverage what would be the best one.

Then both me and my DH had bloodwork done (including test for HIV). I had a pap test, urine test and ultrasound.

I then met with their insurance dept who explained what treatments/medications would be covered for me.Since I was starting IUI cycle with injectibles, the nurse gave us a demo of how to administer injections. I also got a prescription for prenatal vitamins.

They also gave me a booklet with FAQs which might have questions that we might not have thought about.

let me know if you need any more info :) and all the best for your appointment:thumbsup

Thank you ladies for your timely responses. I had my visit yesterday. It was a long session, and, she checked my pelvic region and also did an ultrasound. I also have some blood tests to do. she basically diagnosed me with pcos. I also have to schedule for a fallopian tube check once I get my period. She is gonna put me on 100mg clomid and FSH injectibles. Have you ladies done that? what was your experience? Did it work?

I did have my HSG to check tubes blockages and thankfully I had none. It does cause some mild discomfort for a few hours. But I do not have much info about PCOS but I am sure other ILites can help you.

I did both Clomid + timed IC and clomid +IUI. But unfortunately my DH has low sperm motility and low morphology. So it did not work for me. I am currently doing IUI with injectibiles. The first round did not work as my DH's semen sample had low sperm count post-wash.

But I have seen many cases where people conceive with the first round of clomid itself. So keep your fingers crossed and pray for a BFP soon..
