bailiwick - In one's area of interest or authority; the word derives from the area in which a bailiff, a minor court officer, presides. When the V.P. of Sales starts walking around the factory, complain that she's stepping into your bailiwick.

Do you have any elusive phrase or word that you can either too embarrassed to ask or never surrendered to conventional utterance which your nearly-descriptive, closely-conveys, almost-got-it sidekick delivers. For me that happened with "flag down". For a good part of my life I said "Let's stop that cab" or "Let's hail that taxi". One day I was corrected, you call that action flag down something. So one of these days when your uber app is down and you need to crazily wave to one of those yellow cabs and arrive at work to recount your harrowing tale, you know how to narrate du-uh! in a boring conventional way of course.
