    Dear friends,
We are travelling to India during this Christmas.. and I am in desperate need of suggestions..
Last time, when we flew from India to US, we flew by cathay pacific.. MIL packed some food for us which came for the first half of journey.. however 2nd part of flight - I just ate their veggie/fruit salad and experienced severe stomach upset all through remaining journey as well as for 3 days after landing.. So, I want to be extra careful and carry homemade food.. any suggestions/recipes for nonmessy tasty travel food ?
Also, we are flying British Airways, any ideas about how their food and service is ? I am asking this because when we flew Singapore airlines, the stewards were so so efficient and warm.. in CP, they were not up to the mark.. ( no offense meant, maybe they were having a hard time themselves.. ) So, even little things like healthy snack ideas etc would be of great use to us..

Please pitch in with as many suggestions as you can..

    Loving regards
    Savitha

    Hi,
I always carry eatables on the flight. My favourite would be nuts of your choice, apples, orange, banana chips, granola bars, candies. In short stuff you like to munch, so in case the food is not so great then you have a back up plan and some times it helps to quieten a neighbour's annoying kid too:rant

    Savitha,

I have flown on British airways several times (but not to India) for overseas trips and have had wonderful experiences every time. Don't know if you are aware but you can order Indian meals on British airways. The food was good and I didn't have any stomach issues. But everyone's bodies are different so I can't say you will be fine. Some people just get sick due to something they ate before in India and the symptoms appearing later or because of flying.

Nonetheless, if you do want to take something along, try making masala puri (make hard dough with wheat flour, oil, salt and red chili powder) or you can make a less oily option by roasting it like a chapati instead of deep frying it in oil. It tastes good all by itself and you can have it with pickle if you like.

In case you want to order Indian food on the plane, ask the travel agent who booked it or if you did it online, it is even easier by logging in to your itinerary and changing your food preference.

    Hope this helps

Can you carry food items in the carry-on bag? My understanding was a big NO. You can let them know your food preferences in advance when you book the tickets. Or latest at the airport when you get your boarding passes. Prefer Indian vegetarian food, most of the international flights to India carry them. But usually they carry those meals in exact numbers as per the requests they receive; so make sure you make the choice well in advance.

Re: trip to India (via London) - advice needed abt flight and London info

    Hi Desidiva,
Thanks for your suggestions.. I wil try cooking masalachappathi following your version and maybe carry it like chapatti rolls !
Since you mentioned about your good experience with British Airways, may I ask you if you flew via BA to London.. I am asking this because we have 20 hour stopover in Heathrow airport and I am worried like anything about where to stay(overnight) etc.. If you have been to London ..would like to ask your suggestions..

    Love
    Savitha

    dear writeme,
what ? dont they allow food in carry-on anymore ? I checked some air-travel blogs online where people say that you can carry your own food, incase u have particular preferences.. :hiya I did that last year.. and I'm hoping to do so now.. :p Did you have any trouble carrying food though? please do share if any experience in that case.. I wouldn't want to trouble them at the check-in !
( I already vex them with earrings, bangles, chain etc that I am glad they bear the fuss so politely !)

    love
    Savitha

They don't even allow bottled water beyond security check points here. The size limit is 3oz. If the content is 3oz but the bottle is bigger, they don't even allow that. You have clear instructions in TSA and all airline websites. Only exception is baby food and medications, but that too under strict limits.

Liquids are not allowed. Food is not a problem. Do not carry hand lotions and water bottels etc. Do not panic. Enjoy your journey. Ask your travel air line if they can provide you with a hotel since its 20 hours before you get on to the next flight. good luck:thumbsup

    Savitha,

I have stayed mostly in hotels located in the heart of London. There was one we stayed overnight at near Heathrow (Sheraton or Holiday Inn) but don't remember now exactly as it's been a couple of years. Check Trip advisor website for some good suggestions.

I am assuming you already have documents or visa to enter outside the London Airport. Otherwise this whole thing is fruitless.

About the discussion around not being able to take food on board the plane, here is what my experience has been. I had to travel within the US for the past few months on a weekly basis (for work reasons) and I took food with me in my carry-on (as I didn't check-in my bags) without any problems. They don't allow any liquids like water but anything gravy-like was never banned. They never even opened my bags.

    Hope this helps!
