    What happens when we die?

    The concept of rebirth can be understood only when we know about the subtle body.

    Death is – sthula-sukshma-sarira-viyogah (dissociation of subtly body from a gross body)
    Rebirth is – sthula-sukshma-sarira-samyogah (association of the subte body with a new gross body)

    The results of all our good and bad actions called Punyam and Papam are stored only in our subtle body, which remains a store-house. This is very important.

    At time of death, we cannot see the subtle body leaving the physical body because of its subtle nature and not being perceptible. But it survives the death of the physical body and when it quits, all transactions end and the person is known to be dead.

    Karana Sariram:

    This causal body is made up of causal matter, which is the subtlest form of matter and cannot be seen at all.
    What are the components? The basic principle, we must understand is, matter can never be destroyed. The destruction of a thing means, it is going back to its original form.
    If we melt a gold ornament, it goes back to gold form.
    If we break a pot, t goes back to mud form.
    When a wave is destroyed, it goes back to the ocean in water form.
    So we see that the wave has gone back to its unmanifest condition and from there it will come back to manifest form. This process is repeated eternally.
    Similarly when water gets evaporated when it boils, it disappears from water form but assumes steam or gas form, which is invisible. Extending this, the scriptures say that during Pralaya ( Total destruction of the Universe), all the gross and subtle bodies get destroyed and go back to the invisible, unmanifest form. This is because matter cannot be destroyed.
    So we conclude that the causal body is the unmanifest form in which the gross and subtle bodies exist. This is the most subtle form of matter in which even different energies resolve and become fundamental.
    So before the creation of the world (Shrishti) or after the destruction of the world (Pralayam), the physical and subtle bodies continue to exist, our sense organs existed, our minds and pranas existed and the form in which they existed is called Karana Sariram.
    In a seed, we cannot see the parts of a tree ! From a bar of gold, we do not know what ornaments are going to be made. The same way, in the Karana Sariram, the various components are not visible.

    The function of the causal body is to be the resolution ground of all the bodies and functions, as well as the source for their origination.
    In a drama stage we do not know who are all in the green room. But actors come out to the stage and go back there. Thus the Karana-Sarioram is the green room for Sthula and Sukshma sarirams. It is not directly involved in any transaction because all the transacting organs are dormant.

    Now, let us see its nature. It is a state of blankness because all transactions have ended including perception, thinking and feeling. The physical and subtle bodies have resolved; the locus and instrument of transactin are resolved. So the question of any operation or function taking place does not arise. It is not available to me since my intellect and mind are also resolved. This happens during Pralaya when everything is resolved.

    Does Karana Sariram exist at all ? It must exist, following the law that matter can never be destroyed nor created. In Sanskrit is called Nirvikalpa state since it is fully unmanifest. That is a state where all distinctions like subject and object are resolved.
    In the ocean, I cannot identify the rivers which have merged there. Before merging they were in Savikalpa (manifest ) form.

    Thus we conclude that
    The gross and subtle bodt are in the savikalpa form.
    The causal body is in Nirvikalpa form where the differences are not evident.

    Sarira Thrayam......The name sounds poetic, but the info given by you is far from it...It is laden with a lot of truth and in a way, our sub-conscience is always aware of this fact. But reading in the simple language and format that you manage to present it to us, it is profound. With your expertise, you have simplified the most complex nature of the cycle of our existence. All the same, when one absorbs the matter within your post, it leaves goosebumps and I am awe struck.

    Very Interesting. Yesterday I happened to read about an article where persons explaining about the near death experience. So the following para was interesting to know.

    There are so many things we are unaware of which is taking place at every moment. But what ever it is I should appreciate you chithra you have explained it so simple that we are making an effort to know what it is. Will look forward to your first chapter of Gita.

    This week's post gives the clear cut difference between karana sareeram and sthoola,and sookshma sareerams. It is very fascinatig that our body which seems only flesh and blood has so much purpose and meaning.In fact we start respecting creatinon.The causal body is perhaps what we call life. The sookshma sareeram carries our papas and punyas ,i think.Approximately how longwill it take for it to enter a new body.People keep telling me that we have to do devasams for only 25 years .Is there any truth in that?
