Latha, here I go with answers:
Lapsi - dalia (not pottukadalai) are all broken wheat, as available in Chennai. In almost all shops, Chamba godumai is broken into upma ravai & sold as lapsi. That is what we all generally buy. (in the same, bigger grains are available called sappattu godumai kurunai). Recently in a Marwari shop, I saw Punjab godumai broken for upma & sold. I tried & it is goods as well. No processing - only raw.
The porridge you have mentioned about, is my Abadhbhandavan. If I have to go to some function in the morning & have no time to cook a proper breakfast, I make this previous night & chill in the fridge. In the morning I add chopped fruits & serve. As tasty as convenient.

Yes, we get only quick cooking oats here.

Yes, normal cheese slice is used for all grilled sandwiches etc.
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Thanks, Pappuu.
I too have read about munthirikothu - the name itself sounds delicious! I have never come across the recipe for the same. Now, bearing your request in mind, I will keep my eyes & ears wide open!
Why not you try my Cashew Clusters?? Perhaps they are the same, as per translation!
    Love,
    Chithra.

Thank you so much Chithramma. I bought cheese slices and plan to try the macaroni for kutty and his friend.

If I'm not wrong munthirikothu has no munthiri in it:) I think it's a traditional south tamilnadu sweet and have had it many many years back. I'll remember to ask amma about it and keep you posted.

Chithramma I need your help on menu planning. Kutty's friend's mom had an operation (gall bladder stones) and has been in hospital for 2 weeks. She's discharged tomorrow. I would like to make food for her (and family) this week-end. Her SIL would be coming next week so until then i don't want her to panic and enter kitchen. They are s. indians so you know how much a relief it would be to eat home food after hospital food. What item(s) can I make for a patient? I was thinking of rasam, some simple curry/koottu like that... i don't know what food a post-operation diet shouldn't include...

    Thank you
    Latha

Latha, not being a dietician, I too do not know the post operative food schedule. Avoid whole pulses, spicy food etc. Use more of moong dhal, but all green vegs.
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Hi Latha,

Since u suggested the surgery is for gall bladder stones, I can suggest u a post surgery diet. It shudnot be tempered with oil. No deep fried shallow fried items. Less oil( i mean less than 1 spoon) r no oil is teh best for first few weeks. U can include spices . but not all of them together like garam masala. Jus one r two spices together ( esp in whole spice form( so that they can be removed from food, but still teh flavour will be tehre is good). No hard to digest food like complex kizhanghus and all. I wud suggest rasam without much spice n with garlic(mashes r cut to pieces) ( as garlic helps gas distension). Moong dal kootus with pudalanghai, avarakkai, beans, carrot , cababge , keerai like veggies. u can add murunghakkai poosanikkai soraikkai n others in sambahr too. dinner is best chapathi soaked in milk n sugar r wit some kootu.

    Regards,
    CC

Thank you Chithra. Looks like one has to simply follow post-delivery pathiyam without the ghee, oil factor.

    Dear Chithramma,

Again another menu planning... this time for summerfest at kutty's school. this year the theme is India and the teachers have done a beautiful backdrop all with paper... i had got some sarees and jari for decoration. so it's on 26th July (sunday luckily) and since the only other indian mom is still recovering from her operation i'll have to keep up with Indian food; naturally everyone is eagerly looking forward to indian food more than anything else! other moms will also bring food so it's not that i have to cook for 50 people:hide:.

    I thought of either:

lemon rice, coconut rice and vazhakai chips

    or

dried fruits and nuts pulao with a gravy

now i'm unable to decide the gravy and also a dessert. The gravy i don't want with paneer since that is what they get here in indian restaurants... something different and only found at home type... please help with this choice and also an idea for dessert. i thought of kheer and taking small plastic cups along...

You'll be able to say better what'll attract people the most.

BTW I had tried coconut rice on Germans earlier and it was very well received. I would like to present south indian because they don't get it here at all.

also i'm all ready to prepare one or 2 dishes more as well because this is kind of rare opportunity:) and you know many victims as well.. intha maathiri chance vantha vida koodathu

    thank you Chithramma

Dear Latha, I like your enthusiasm & the interest with which you want to try.
Yes, make a mild, non-spicy pulao like Dry fruit & Nuts pulao. Do you have the recipe or should I post??
If you like to make 2,3 side dishes, one can be a dhal. Try Jain moong with sprouts. Brinjal bartha will be good. I feel you can make any one of our typical SI puli vitta kootu.
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Dear Chithramma,

This time I got 'Thanjavur style idli rava' from Ambiga appalam depot. My idea was to make arisi uppuma or uppuma kozhukattai. Can I?
