    Hi,

Just thought of posting this picture of the pooja mandapam/shelf completely designed by us and done from scratch by my husband. Planning for some more enhancements like door with bell and cabinet lightings. If you have any suggestions please do pour it in.

Very cool. Is he into wood working? Can you elaborate more on what kind of materials and tools were needed for this. Please keep posting as and when more features are added.:thumbsup

    Hi BeeAmma,

Thanks for a quick appreciating response. Its just his interest in carpentry thats all. He is generally good at art work and even know tailoring. Since we moved to our home 1 and 1/2 years back, he wanted to be handy in learning such things, so its just a try.

Infact when we wanted to do this one, we got quotes from different custom furniture shop but their starting price was $1000+. So we decided to give a shot before we pass an order to the furniture store. It worked out good and we kind of got what we wanted.

The entire shelf is unfinished pine. We are thinking to stain it at some point but this shade just goes fine with our interior so leaving it as it is for now. All lumbar materials are from lowes and HD. He bought tools from there. My brother helped him initially and later my DH took care of all by himself (like cutting, planing, glueing etc).

The tools he used were Black & Decker electric laser saw, electric planer (forgot the brand name), gorilla glue, nails.

Sure, will definitely post on any improvements.

beautiful work Advitha. Looks very nice and is good size too. I want to offer some suggestions, but cannot come up with any - do you want to keep it open? If not, may be he can get a single door and fix it and enhance it with designs. Cabinet lighting does sound very interesting and will give a beautiful look in which case, a glass door will enhance the looks - just thinking out loud.

It is a beautiful piece of work - great job.

Thank you for your suggestion. We have planned to leave it open and add door only to the bottom most shelf so that we can put pooja items. The picture doesn't do a good justice of his work as its taken with a cell phone. I'll try to upload a closeup image of the shelf. We are also thinking about getting the tower/crown made from India if we have enough time. Lets see what the divine thinks.

    Suggestions are most welcome.

Here's another close-up image of the shelf. Both of these pictures are taken with cellphone so there's a compromise on clarity

    Hi Uma,
Great work!! pls tell ur hubby too that he has done a wonderful work.
i have always wanted a separate pooja place, this is soo perfect and done very neatly. is this his first wood project?
did u have to sand all the wood pieces?

maybe u can stain it in natural finish, whatever colour u want it to match, that way it will also be a protective coat to hard work u have done. or even a polyeurthane coat.
you can also attach some wood carving trims to the goppuram or the front pieces, dont know if it will make it too much, just a thought.

Yesterday we went to HD to get some stains and polyeruthane sprays to refinish our coffee table. so the sales guy said it is always better to protect ur furniture with this coat etc, not sure if this true or he is trying to market stuff.
    Do u have any idea?
