Thruthiyai is the third day after the New Moon.
    Akshayam means “ growth”.
In the tamil month of Chithirai, the thruthiyai which falls in the Shukla Paksham (valar pirai) is called Akshaya Thruthiyai.
Thrythiyai occurs ever month, but the one in Chithirai is celebrated specially.
On every thruthiyai, Chandra darisanam is considered auspicious.

The legends associated with Akshaya Thruthiyai are thus:

Kuchela, the poor friend Of Krishna went to see Krishna with some aval (poha) tied in his upper cloth. Kannan welcomed Kuchela happily and putting a handful of poha in his mouth uttered the word “Akshayam”. At once, the humble abode of Kuchela became a palace & he became a very prosperous man.

Another legend is that Parasurama, the sixth avatara of Vishnu was born on this day.

Many people offer tharpanams to forefathers on this day. This is done to incur their blessings.
It is very good to worship, Shiva Parvathi, Shriman Narayanan, Sri Lakhmi Devi on this day.
Lakshmi is supposed to have chosen this day to worship Lord Kubera on this day, to be blessed with Kubera Sampath.
Krutha Yuga is said on have started this day. Just like a yuga lasts for millions of years, any action done on this day is supposed to yield, benfits, multifold times.
Any new venture started on this day will last long and well.
So this day is supposed to be auspicious for registering a business deal, buy a new property, open new accounts and last but not least to buy new clothes, jewellery etc.
It does not end there, it is the most ideal day to do charity, help the physically challenged, do financial helps for higher studies for needy, deserving people as well.
It is said that giving curd rice to others improves longevity of life. Distribution of sweets, helps to get over the obstacles in getting married. Distribution of grains and cereals, prevents accidents and untimely death. By giving cattle feed, prosperity will increase.
So, let us do good deeds on this auspicious day and pray for good things in life.

    Love,
    Chithra.

    Dear Chithra,

Thank you for this short and sweet article on Akshaya Thrithiya. I heard about it and had no idea what it really was. I cannot remember this being mentioned all that much when I was a young girl still living in India.
I do know the story of Kuchela, but never connected that with this day.
I also enjoyed reading your Tamil account of it.
    Thank you.

    L, Kamla

    Dear Chitra Madam,

Thanks for informative post. Though Akshaya Thrutheeya is becoming commercial these days, it was good to read the significance of the day. It is generally believed that whatever we buy on the day, will be AKSHAYA. It has become a good marketing technique for selling gold! People rush to buy gold expecting it to become multifold.

Akshaya thrutheeya is always a very important day for me and my husband for we got married on that auspicious day! We wanted to buy gold, but the shooting prices scare us away... ha ha ha. Only the prices are becoming multifold!!!

Let us do good deeds and pray for peace.

    Veena

    Dear Kamla,
Thanks - you are to me what only you can be !
You are right, A T was unknown in earlier days. But now it is a good weapon(?) for marketing technique & is best exploited by jewellery shops.
But alas, the charity aspect takes only a back seat !
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Dear Veena,
Many many happy returns of the day ! Pray Meenaksahi, love, peace of mind, happiness and prosperity be Akshayam in your life.
All shops do bookings in advance, in Chennai. One has to just go & collect the articles !
There is an astounding traffic jam in the vicinity of jewellery shops !
But you both have bagged in eachother, the best gift, life can offer !
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Dear Gayathri,
Celebrating A T is a recent phenomenon, can't help saying it.
Many I L ites sent me P M s asking me to write about it - I did exactly that.
I do noy buy anything new on that day, but believe in feeding hungry people.
Their blessings mean more to me than gold, honestly !
    Thankyou for your F B.
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Dear all,
As you said the most ideal day to do charity it is two hundred percent right. When many people are rushing to buy gold, diamond on that single day, traffic have been regulated, many measures have been taken. Why should every one buy luxuries only on that day?(Excuse me Ilite,I am not against it,i am not against any one). The whole city falls on the shops with no way to breathe.I don't understand.Though it is a belief that buying ornaments on that day will make us to increase our treasuries,a sentimental belief.Good.Nothing wrong. But according to me as chitvish said donating doing chatrity on that day ,instead of buying ormaments and storing on the lockers,Why not we donate to the one who don't have anything.Yesterday i happen to travel in the train.I happen to see three or four blind persons selling plastic items to make their living.Thee are many beggars .I donated a bit of money to them,I think i can help a bit.As was rightly said ,on akshaya thrithya offering service to the needy is a right way to celebrate them.I celebrated peacefully.
Please Ilites, bear with me if i am controversial to any of your ideas
