    Pls help.
I have never own a Kerala mundu set so I bought a beautiful one with a very nice zari border. I was thrilled when it came.
But my hubby said how I can wear a white sari cause only widows wear one.
But I said it Kerala mundu!!!!

As we are not from Kerala but from north can someone here help me and tell me is it ok. I searched the web I found out that all the Kerala sets are actually white!
So does this mean that all the ladies wear them regardless their status?

Sorry for me being so ignorant

    Thnx a lot.

    Re: Kerala Mundu set

    Dear Kalyana,

Welcome to IL! I am from Kerala and I love wearing Kerala sarees and mundu set in white, cream, off white (shades of white basically). It symbolises the purity and chastity of the woman. In fact in Kerala, within some communities, the only tradition in a marriage is 'pudava koda' handing over of the white Kerala saree by the groom to the bride. The tying of mangalsutra, exchanging rings and garlands are all secondary- not considered final.

So, go ahead and wear the Kerala mundu set and have fun.

    Re: Kerala Mundu set

    Dear K,
In India, there are diverse cultures and traditions. In olden days, all these were typical.
Older women in the North wear pastel dresses as they age, but in South it is deep and dark colors of oldies.
And the Kerala saree is off white mostly and it is a simple dress and even now women wear it to weddings too. No need for heavily borcaded sarees there.
As Vidya said, giving a mundu set to a girl is considered more important in marriages.
Go ahead and wear a set and enjoy the compliments.

    Re: Kerala Mundu set

    Hi,
    I second Vidya.
During marriage, after the thali kettu, the groom gifts the bride a mundu set on a platter. This signifies that he will now assume the responsibility of providing for her.

On festive occasions the settum mundum is worn by all women. (married/unmarried)

So please go ahead and wear your mundu set and feel proud of it!

Hi The keral mundu is not actually white. It's color kinda offwhite or bridal white. Do not worry... wear and attract your hubby and the community.

    hi,
In Kerala , that is our traditional saree, which every one wears regardless of the ststus. And if u look carefully u can see it is not white ( which widows wear) - it is off white and is rich with kasavuor border. So it is not something for widows. So u can wear them. Ok.

its not white.. its champagne or white wine and the border is heavily decorated. I wore for my engagement in NY - so worries. Brides wear it as well, so go ahead! :thumbsup

    Re: Kerala Mundu set

And Kerala is a State with very few sentiments and such things. Women remarry if they feel like it, it is not an odd thing there.

I just can't make out what this is all about????Rant
