    Hi ladies,

I have a new problem I'm dealing with and I'm so worried! Yesterday at my husband's work they did a health screening for him and his cholesterol is 274! Anything over 200 is AT RISK for heart attack. :spin

My problem is I cook very healthy at home but he snacks at work and eats very fatty foods away from home. I've been reading up on some foods to help lower cholesterol, so my question is, when starting a diet to lower cholesterol, how long does it usually take to get back to a healthy number??? I'm going to have him try eating oats and also cut back on meat (he's non veg). Also more exercise. Does anyone have any suggestions from their own experiences? I want him to get out of RISK range as soon as possible!

    Thank you! :thankyou2:

ask the doctor what he needs to follow and he has to change his eating habits totally and start to exercise to reduce the cholestrol level.
try to cut down on meat and fatty foods.
go to the doctor with his report and he shall guide you accordingly

    good luck

    Hi,

This is the information I gathered from IL and as well as other sites.

    Hope this helps...

    By latamurali:

I prepare KOLU / HORSEGRAM SUNDAL or SALAD almost 4 days a week , since it helps us to control cholestrol ( please check our Recipe forum for KOLLU recipes

Use very very little oil for cooking , like jus for seasoning, no deep frying and all

Say BIG NO to GHEE BUTTER CREAM CURD FRIES PICKLE

And, even before we have cholestrol, very very very rarely i use COCONUT

Use GARLIC daily in any form

    ----------------------------------
    By Sunitha:

A juice made from Apple cucumber and celery is known to fight cancer and reduce cholesterol. It also improves any sort of stomach upset and headache. This juice is a must have once you have crossed your 30's. If you have this juice every other day, then you will not have to worry about your cholesterol level any more.
Sample proportion - 2 parts apple, 1 part Cucumber and 1 part celery
    ----------------------------------
    Daily meal should have:

    * One medium-size fruit (apple, orange, banana, pear).
    * 1/2 cup of raw, cooked, canned, or frozen fruits or vegetables.
    * 3/4 cup (6 ounces) of 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice.
    * 1/2 cup of cut up fruit.
    * 1/2 cup of cooked or canned legumes (beans, peas).
    * 1 cup of raw, leafy vegetables (lettuce, spinach).
    * 1/4 cup of dried fruit (raisins, apricots, mango).

    -----------------------------------------
Avocados. Although this is one of the few fruits high in fat, it’s mainly monounsaturated fat. Several studies find that eating one avocado a day can lower your LDL as much 17 percent while raising your HDL. Try them in salads and sandwiches or mashed with a bit of lemon juice, onion, and chopped tomato as a topping for baked potatoes. Just don’t go overboard; one avocado has about 340 calories.

Garlic. Garlic can lower cholesterol modestly as well as prevent blood from becoming sticky and forming dangerous clots. The compound most studies focus on, allicin, is the same one that gives garlic its distinctive odor. In one analysis of five trials in which participants received either garlic supplements or a placebo, the authors concluded that you could lower your total cholesterol about 9 percent with the equivalent of 11/2 to 3 cloves of garlic daily for two to six months.

You need to crush, chop, or otherwise bruise the cloves to release the allicin. For
a sweet way to get your garlic, remove the loose paper covering from a head of garlic, cut off the tops of the garlic, drizzle olive oil on it, wrap in foil, and bake in a 350°F oven until soft, about an hour. Then squeeze the heads of the cooked garlic onto toasted bread and spread.

Oranges. Think of your morning orange juice as cholesterol medicine in a glass.
After drinking three glasses of orange juice a day for four weeks, 25 participants in a Canadian trial increased their HDL levels 21 percent and lowered their LDL/HDL ratio 16 percent. Of course, if you’re watching your calorie intake, three glasses of juice is a lot; you’ll probably want to stick to a glass or two a day.

Prunes. Prunes (dried plums) contain a special kind of soluble fiber called pectin,
which forms a gel in your intestines that sops up cholesterol before it hits your bloodstream. Blend cooked prunes with water into a puree that can replace oils and fats in baking, add dried prunes to stews for a delicious sweetness, or chop and sprinkle over salads, yogurt, cottage cheese, or cereal.

LDL Less than 100mg/dl is best
You LDL goal may depend on other medical conditions you may have. Your LDL level affects your risk for heart disease
and stroke. The lower your LDL cholestrol, the lower your rsik. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you know your personal risk factors and goal LDL.

    HDL Greater than 40 mg/dl
This goal may be higher if you are female or if you have other medical conditions. In general a higher HDL is better.

    TRIGLYCERIDES Less than 150 mg/dl

Good luck and God bless !

ok so I am in my 20's, 5'4 and I weight about 115 lbs (52 Kilos) and about 4 years ago (I was a probably 120 lbs or so) my cholestrol was 199. I eat meat but not as much to shoot it up.

I went on an Oatmeal diet (2% Milk and Oats, no sugar and pinch of salt) for about 6 weeks and I ate it religiously!! I dropped to 161. O yes and I walked.. I walked everywhere I could. So it can be done, I might have to go back on it again, but no worries.

    Does your hubby smoke?

    Hi V,

Thanks for the info! No, my hubby doesn't smoke anymore, he used to but when we got married two years back he stopped. He really likes to eat meat... at work he eats hotdogs and sausage biscuits, so I told him that has got to stop or else he could surely get a heart attack.

When I met my dh he was in such good shape, he could run a marathon, went to the gym everyday, ate right, but after getting married he stopped going to the gym, started eating more fast foods, now he is overweight. He says it's because he has no time to exercise because of work. :frown:

Do you have any tips how he can avoid being tempted to eat the fatty foods? I thought to send him to work with some healthy snacks, that way when he feels hungry he can eat something good instead of a hot dog!

So you think 6 months would be a good time frame to see a difference? He is 34, do you think he could have a heart attack or stroke even now??? The doctor who did the screening said he should start taking action right away to correct his diet!

And by the way, congratulations on dropping your cholesterol, it's good to see you are taking proactive steps to stay healthy!!! :clap

    hi asuitablegirl,
your husband should join the gym asap, stop eating meat and you should give him salads or fruit for snacks, being 34 and having cholestrol is not good.
your husband should start taking care of himself.

    Thanks Alpa!

Actually, we have a small gym in the apartment complex we stay at. The problem is getting him to go! bonk

I will definitely work on cutting back the meats. Already I have planned out the meals for the coming week with lots of veggies and fish, only one day with meat. Next I will try to minimize the meat to only couple of times a month, but I feel I should start slowly or he will become cranky. Rant

Today there was a small progress though, we went for a walk around where we live. And tomorrow when we go grocery shopping I'll make sure to buy the items everyone suggested to me. I hope a couple of months from now he will have improvements in his health. I will keep you ladies posted about how everything turns out!

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

    hi there,
My husband had this same issue a few years ago, so he went on a strict diet and eating only low-fat meals, cutting out ALL fried foods and exercising regularly. I also give him a spoonful of fenugreek seeds each morning along with his vitamins and omega-3s. You can soak the seeds overnight or take them raw in the morning with water. Fenugreek has shown to reduce cholestrol according to Ayurveda.
These suggestions might seem easy, but it takes discipline and willingness to improve one's health...I wish you all the best, hope your husband sees good results soon.

    take care!
