WHAT IS Karadaiyan NONBU or vradham.
Read in the link the why and how of it in link below. Interesting story behindthis.

Karadaiyan Nombu Adai | Vella and Uppu Adai

    * But i ponder why there is no nonbu observed by gentleman husbands for the longevity of his Darling Wife?

My spouse & sambandhi and daughter made a joint effort and we menfolk enjoyed their celebration from a distant.

For Usa the timing of tieing the special turmeric applied thread or chord would vary. Check almanac in google.

*could someone enlighten me on my apprehension.
Another question - why thisadai has been made or chosen as naivedhyam?
The adai sweet vs salt is here:

Read the link for the story and then look for recipe in UT. IT needs overnight soaking the ingredients.
    Regards.

Karadatan nonbu is observed at the conjunction of the montha Maasi and Panguni
The function is more known by the neivedyam than by the savitri vratam.Savitri is stated to have made tikkas or adais out of clay, spread some seeds here and there and kept it on hay and placed it in a pot of boiling water and just covered it.She added some honey to taste and gave it to Yama. The muddy tikka turned out to be a tasty dish - adai ,thanks to the sincerity and devotion of Savitri.
Even today while steaming Kara Adai people used to place hay or grass inside the pressure cooker.Earlier, my mother said that they were preparing only sweet adai and later to satiate the taste buds they started preparing savoury adai and named the festival itself as 'kaara adai' ( hot chili adai).
When I think of Savitri ,more than the karadayan nonbu, my mind goes to the epic poem
    'savitri' written by Aurobindo.

Savitri is the masterpiece of Sri Aurobindo published in two parts in 1950 and 1951. He revised the book eighteen times before publishing it and it took nearly fifty years for completion. He intended to write a lengthy introduction to Savitri, which never occurred. He did, however, write an author's note which functions as an effective summary that appears at the beginning of the poem in all its published versions. It reads:
"The tale of Sathyavan and Savitri is recited in the Mahabharata as a story of conjugal love conquering death. But this legend is, as shown by many features of the human tale, one of the many symbolic myths of the Vedic cycle. Satyavan is the soul carrying the divine truth of being within itself but descended into the grip of death and ignorance; Savitri is the Divine Word, daughter of the Sun, goddess of the supreme Truth who comes down and is born to save; Aswapati, the Lord of the Horse, her human father, is the Lord of Tapasya, the concentrated energy of spiritual endeavour that helps us to rise from the mortal to the immortal planes; Dyumatsena, Lord of the Shining Hosts, father of Satyavan, is the Divine Mind here fallen blind, losing its celestial kingdom of vision, and through that loss its kingdom of glory. Still this is not a mere allegory, the characters are not personified qualities, but incarnations or emanations of living and conscious Forces with whom we can enter into concrete touch and they take human bodies in order to help man and show him the way from his mortal state to a divine consciousness and immortal life."
We have to read and re read even the introduction many times to understand this.
Savitri cannot be treated as an ordinary wife longing to have the company of her husband to beget children and retain her sumangali padvi.
Aurobindo's Savitri depicts not the mere mental agony of a wife losing her husband, but is
a beautiful admixture of mysticism, occultism, philosophy and the history of evolution,
of the gods and nature as a whole.
The whole poem first appeared in book-form in two parts in 1950 and 1951. Sri Aurobindo's letters written to his disciples on various aspects of the poem are now part of the book. This modern epic written in a modern language is also a modern-day scripture. It recounts the saga of human victory over ignorance and conquest of death.

An interesting perspective was shared at Madras Management Associations's Women's Day Convention where we were told that Savithri is the Positivity within us, Yama is the Negativity and Satyavan is the spark of Divinity embedded within everyone. It is that divinity that helps positivity to triumph over negativity. Is that why our wise ancestors said that : 'Kanavane Kann Kanda Deivam'?!( Husband is God to wife)
The empowered women will not agree to this concept though they might like husbands to live long.
This story is a big blow to astrologers who predicted the horoscope of satyavan.

However Bhaskaracharya's daughter Leelavathi's husband, who was predicted to die a day after marriage, met with his death, not withstanding Bhaskaracharya, the renouned mathematician and astrologer conducted the marriage on an auspicious day noted by him.
It was savitri's destiny that her husband should live long and it was Lilavathi's fate that she attained widowhood, the day after marriage.

Karwa Chauth: When Indian men fast for their wives
Although the popular tradition involves married women fasting through the day and praying for the good health and longevity of their husbands, the celebration of this festival has several other layers to it.

If you are a Bollywood buff, or a Hindi television soap addict, you will definitely be familiar with Karva Chauth.

No longer is Karva Chauth a fast where the wife prays for her husband’s health and long life. It has evolved into a ritual that celebrates and honours the marital relationship.

‘I am a great believer in the equality of the sexes’
With the changing times, it is inevitable that rituals undergo a metamorphosis as well.

Today, Karva Chauth is not limited to women.

Thanks to movies like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, the popularity of the festival has increased multifold.

Men too display their love and appreciation for their partners by joining them in this fast.

Karva Chauth is no longer a traditional compulsion; it has become a day during which married couples celebrate each other.

Anuj Khurana, a 33-year-old entrepreneur from Goa, says, “I fast during Karva Chauth because I feel strange that my wife Avanti is not eating while I am. We keep telling each other not to keep the fast and we both end up doing it.”

Avishek Das, 35, who works with a global alcohol brand in Bengaluru, is Bengali but keeps this fast. He says his love for his beautiful model Punjabi wife urges him to give her company on this day too.

Avishek smiles, “I am a great believer in the equality of the sexes. It is sad that the woman (wife) has to make a sacrifice (remain hungry) for her husband’s long life. Why can’t it be the other way round? In a society that is already patriarchal, it would be lovely if the husband gave his hungry wife company and they broke bread together at the first lunar glimpse. That’s why I do it.”

“Of course, I don’t believe it will help either of us live longer. It’s just a tradition that she likes to follow and I simply join in rather than feasting while she remains hungry. It’s my way of showing gratitude,” says Avishek.

You have whetted ny appewtite for the adais, both sweet and sacory, Accompanied by dollops of home madeb8utterm they are synonymous with heaven. But I think the recipe is disappearing along with the rituals it is associated with.

There is a story behind it regarding the adais and karamani but that apart I enjoy the festival more for the vellai adai along with a dollop of butter on a banana leaf as Balajee says is heaven
