I think I look old and fat the way I draped my saree

it reminds me of how my Aunties from India look (of course I have seen older ladies wear sarees and they look slim and elegant)

That is why I panicked and solicited fashion advice

I don’t see that Sui. You maybe too critical of yourself.
To get better silhouette, you need to switch from a cotton underskirt to a fish design saree silhouette skirts designed specifically for the purpose. You could also try with good fitting jeans instead. Also try a different type of saree. Cotton sarees are not designed to flatter, they are for comfort. A printed silk saree worn with a proper silhouette skirt/jeans is probably what you are looking for.

I gained 10 lbs since I started commuting to work again. It’s a real struggle to stay fit. Hence this critical thinking.

I will try wearing saree with proper silhouette skirt/jeans. Fortunately I have sarees of other fabrics.

In my eyes you are perfect. You have the shape and curves. The type of saree is like muslin cotton so it gives a puffy look. I am sure you will look great in any flowy designer saree with single pleat. By the way i really liked your blouse design and black cotton saree very matching, elegant looking. Now i feel like i wanted to wear this set but sadly i don't have any.

I think the word "Aunty" might have offended some people and would not have posted a response. You are putting so much effort which someone can show you in a minute. If there are any Indian ladies whom you come across, work/neighborhood/temple, you can request them to help you and your journey will be faster. Just take the needed attire and show up in a temple. I am sure there will some private space where someone can help you walk thorough step by step. Even an Indian saree store in your are might be a good place and there should be women who can help you.

Rita kapur says there are over 108 ways to drape saree. In various parts of India the draping changes as one travels from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.
