    Hi,
    Our house is about 50 yrs old. We have good spacious kitchen but very less counter space and storage pantry.
    So we thought to extend counterspace by having another set and to put all the gadgets and dinnersets etc.
    Right now we are dumping things here and there, put extra tables /cabinets all mismatching, putting things under above everywhere.
    Plan was extra countershelf + matching counter top on existing countershelf ( so both match) + extra cabinets on new countershelf
    Now contractor is suggesting to have all the kitchen done together ( so everything matches), which is costing 25 grand. Since they will be breaking everything apart anyways except current cabinets.

    I am really scared of spending all this .. we are planning india trip also. ALso we are renovating other places of house so it will be easily 100 grand gone.

    What are your suggestions? I am trying to cut corners and save money here and there, but my H does not think twice to be honest, he spends 100$ easily for people he does not even like.

    Mixing old and new cabinets is fine, the difference is not too obvious. Matching new counter to existing one is a bit more tricky. Also, when they are working with the existing counter top, such as replacing the sink for example, they end up damaging a tile or two.

    My experience has been to not skimp on kitchen renovation. The next important is bathroom. Money spent on these two areas is worth it. The other parts, including backyard, front yard, are secondary for me.

    completely new shelf + new cabinets on one side
    Replacing existing countertops to match
    Cabinets - will not match exactly on new and old unless we replace all
    Sink might damage or not fit in - will have to replace
    backsplash tiles will damage - so will have to remove but may do it later ourself + now with extra 4000

    Now, existing cabinets - replace with new to match new one = is adding to make it 25K. Bascially adding 10K to 15K(for above mentioned)

    Are you cash flowing this expense? Is it emergency (like can't function single day without renovation), if the later is NO I would wait until I come back from India trip

    25K is much lower than what one expect for kitchen renovation because good cabinets and countertops( if its granite or quartz) are expensive. If we keep the old cabinet's and use new to match the same style, money can be saved. But its better to use good quality counter tops, matching backsplash, kitchen sink, and hardwares. If changing cabinets is not that expensive in your place its better to replace it.

    Also ,its good to consider kitchen exhaust fan/ vent with opening outside. Its good for Indian cooking. As you are spending money, why not make it look good by investing more. Kitchen is the centre part where we spend more time and investment will be reflected in your house value.

    Another way is to build a walkin storage room for kitchen or pantry or cabinet with contrasting style or add a big kitchen island( contrasting colors also look good). In that way you can still keep the cabinets and can change countertop to make it better. It all depends on the area and floor plan of your kitchen area. I use pinterest app ( Pinterest.com ) for ideas and pics. Anyway ,consult multiple kitchen renovation contractors in your area before finalising anything. Also, consider different styles.     Nothing is emergency .. my H brain suddenly created emergency ,that how he works.
    It is funny ...
    We got some appliances and no place to put. ofcourse, we all have so much stuff in kitchen ( indian kitchens ), they were all shoved here and there before ..also. Appliances triggered everything, kitchen was like important but NOT URGENT at all...
    Infact , i want to wait till covid and other things settle down.
    Now, everything else has changed, kid back to daycare for more days because we can not manage renovation message with him at home, change office- visits, and might have to change india trip as well( parents as waiting :-()

    tickets are also expensive..
    He has now already signed everything..
