Couple in India sue son for not giving them a grandchild

A couple in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand are suing their only son and his wife for not giving them a grandchild after six years of marriage.

Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad, 61 and 57, say they used up their savings raising their son, paying for his pilot's training as well as a lavish wedding.

They are demanding compensation worth nearly $650,000 (£525,000) if no grandchild is born within a year.

Their son and his wife do not appear to have commented.

The highly unusual lawsuit was filed on grounds of "mental harassment".
    ...
... parents say they arranged his marriage to Shubhangi Sinha, now 31, in 2016, in the hope that they would have a "grandchild to play with" during their retirement.

The parents say they paid for a wedding reception in a five-star hotel, a luxury car worth $80,000 and a honeymoon abroad.

"My son has been married for six years but they are still not planning a baby," Mr Prasad said. "At least if we have a grandchild to spend time with, our pain will become bearable."

The couple's lawyer, AK Srivastava, told The National that the couple had demanded the money "because of mental cruelty".

"It is a dream of every parent to become a grandparent. They had been waiting for years to become grandparents."

The couple's petition, filed in Haridwar, is expected be heard by a court on 17 May.

I feel sorry for Shubhangi Sinha, now 31. She will be in my thoughts and prayers.

As for Shrey Sagar, 35, poor man will need professional help to deal with the "performance" anxiety - bachcha within a year or pay up.

I was reading the story on twitter to see why they are asking for $650,000. Looks like they spent $65,000 on his pilot training in the U.S. Then, they spent $80,000 on a luxury car for him. Further, they paid for a wedding reception in a five-star hotel and a honeymoon abroad. They also supported the son when he lost his job.

The parents are generous enough to say they don't care about gender, just want a grandchild to play with during retirement. : ) Now, they don't have savings and have had to take a loan to build a home.

The thing that takes the prize is that they are seeking 2.5 crores from son and 2.5 crores from DIL. : )

To be fair to the parents, they followed the script and spent all savings on the child's education, wedding and etc. Now, they should continue to follow the script and seek a monthly allowance from the son under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. They cannot go all American and file fancy-pants hi-funda suits such as "compensation for mental cruelty".

For whatever reason, CNN presents these two stories next to each other for me:

I came across the post too and to be honest was shocked that any parent will think on such lines! However, I dont feel sorry for the son or DIL in this case. The parents filing a legal case on the issue is an extreme reaction, but it is but natural for parents to look forward and expect a family to grow after marriage of their children by grandkids being born. In my own case, my two sons were married in their late 20s and without any pressure or prompting from our side, went on to have children of their in normal course, which is the case in most families. With the result although the children live and have independent homes of their own , the mental fulfilment of a complete family and extended family etc is surely there.
The lawsuit filed is only after more than 5 years of marriage , i can imagine their frustration,! But, being seniors they could have just maintained their dignity by just cutting off any relation with their son and DIL knowing they have no consideration for the very natural feelings and expectations of their parents.
I was not going to comment on this, but seeing that you had asked @rosequeen for her thoughts, knowing she is an elder and has contrasting views to you progressive youngsters, decided to give my thoughts too .

I would feel sad if my parents had viewed me just as a vessel to produce their grandchildren in return for their investment. And sadder still if they could not fathom a meaningful life without said grandchildren.
In my case I married in my late twenties but due to a variety of circumstances I did not have a child until my early forties. My brother married in his late thirties and had children quickly after. So my parents did not have any grandchildren for a very long time.
Thankfully they chose to lead a productive and fulfilling retired life instead of embarrassing themselves and their family by filing frivolous lawsuits. And they are awesome grandparents!

Your thoughts are I'll admit a bit surprising, joylokhi, but always good to know all points of view.

I solicited rosequeen's thoughts to see how such court cases are related to patriarchy, if at all. I am sorry I did not realize she is an elder. I somehow got the impression she has young kids in elementary school after reading posts in the US public schools grooming thread. My bad.
