Please help me with a doubt in my daughters recently held board exam maths paper..please have patience as this is going to be a long post

I have attached the image of the case study problem below.

    20220506_083703.jpg

The question is to write a quadratic equation in terms of width of the pool and then to find the value of the width.
Most of the kids have done it in the following way
    L*B =36
    (7-2x) (12-2x) =36
    84-14x-24x+4x^2 = 36
    4x^2-38x+84-36=0
    4x^2-38x+48=0
    2x^2-19x+24=0
    Product 48
    Sum 19
And so on and finally they all have got the value of x as 3/2. Almost all of the youtube videos which discussed the maths paper's solutions also have followed the same method.
This method has been followed keeping x as the width of one side of the sidewalk and hence the width(x) they have got is also for one side of the sidewalk.

My daughter has done the problem with a different approach. I have given below the workings
    L*B =36
    (7-x) (12-x) =36
    X^2-19x+48 =0
    X=3 m
Now she has taken x as the width of the whole sidewalk, formed the quadratic equation and hence got the value of the same.

Isn't this also correct? But all the kids in school and youtube videos(I asked the same query in the comments section) are saying that my daughter may or may not get marks for the width but definitely not for the equation.

We generally don't discuss the question after the exam, But this time, this question was largely discussed after the exam because these concepts were learnt in 8th grade and in their current 10th grade, specially the quadratic equation chapter they are doing completely different problems. So when suddenly a problem type which they haven't worked out in their grade came all the kids in school discussed and my daughter said that this is how she formed the equation. Now she is upset that none of them are getting her point and that she will loose all 4 marks since the youtube videos too are using the first approach and probably the official answer key will have the same solution since that's what 90 percent of the people have done. And she is prone to silly mistakes, so she is not sure where else she will loose marks. She put in a lot of hardwork and also has scored full in maths in her first term. She couldn't take that she will loose marks for something which she has done right. All my consolation is falling in to deaf ears. I want to help my child. Can someone pls tell me how to take this to the notice of CBSE and how to actually make them see my message.

Can she ask her maths teachers at school or tuition class?

Thank you for your reply malstrom. She doesn't go to tuitions and her school maths teacher is not that friendly enough to approach. So my daughter is hesitant.

    Tagging @hrastro.

Most likely the board will not entertain preemptive requests such as this; for logistics reasons and more.

There seems to be the option of re-evaluation: CBSE Re-Evaluation Process 2022, Improvement Form, & Verification Of Class 10th &12th Board Exam But like most re-evaluations, this is limited to checking that each answer got graded, all parts "a", "b" "c"... of the answer got graded, and the overall total marks is correct. They don't look into unfair or incorrect grading.

The question itself is a bit vague. They have given unnecessary information like it is an in-ground pool, installed by a family, in their backyard. The maths part of the question in (a) and (b) is vague and there are multiple interpretations possible. The genius who wrote the question should have at least put an x in the picture to show what the x is supposed to measure.

Recently my childhood classmate told me about the re-evaluation she had done for her class 12 paper. That experience stayed with her all these decades. It is hard on your daughter right now, no doubt, but as a parent, you have to realize it is more a learning moment, and in the long term this maths exam score will matter less and less. You simply have to let her live through this and learn. Such times are the most challenging ones for a parent. But, you cannot "make her feel better" or "console her" or "cheer her up" before the whole saga has run its course. Just be there for her. Keep an eye on what she is up to. But, don't keep talking and talking.

If you feel up to it, you can try posting it in social media. That approach can go either way.

She should talk to her maths teacher. The teen years are a good time to start learning how to approach teachers, mentors and adults who may be unapproachable but can make a difference in your life.

I have lived through a few such times when the world is unfair to one's child. It is tough tough tough. But, this too, shall pass. And thankfully, the memory of each event gets hazy with time.

Thank you Rihana for your detailed reply. True everything in life is a learning experience and the point about talking to the teacher made by you and malstrom is valid. I will suggest it to my dd one more time, may be after all the exams are over. As you said revaluation is just waste of money. They don't actually look in to the correctness of a question or answer. Only retotaling. My niece had a bad experience too. She was expected to be the school topper but the results were totally unexpected. Once the board results come all the schools put up the toppers name in the board. They don't wait for revaluation. And to help the child even if we apply for revaluation, it doesn't always turn fruitful. I still remember how she cried. Yes now she is in her final year of college and understands 10th marks are not something you cry for, yet at that time it was difficult that her haedwork didn't pay off. How much ever we hail hard work, that alone isn't enough all the time. As you said it would have been so much better if questioner had the X marked as you have done in the picture. I have already posted in the SM. But I don't know if that's enough to bring the attention. Probably many should join the request which is again difficult as most have used the first approach. We can only try. Rest in God's hands.

If x is width of concrete sidewalk then pool length and breadth are 7-2x & 12-2x. The area of pool is given 36.
    Now solve for x.

Thanks sir for your reply. You have formed the equation assuming x as the width of one side of sidewalk and the value of x will be 3/2 per your equation. If we assume x as the width of both sides of the sidewalk then we don't have to subtract 2x but only x and we will get the value of width as 3m which when divided by 2 will give the width of one side of the sidewalk. Isn't both answers the same? But 90 percent people have done it your way. I feel what my daughter has done is also right and she should get full marks for this question. The question simply states x is the width, but doesn't specifically mention its the width of one side of the sidewalk.
If we subtract 3 from the length and breadth, the length and breadth becomes 4 and 9 respectively. If we subtract 2*3/2 from length and breadth they become 4 and 9 again. So shouldn't both approaches be given marks

“Around the pool with width x“ is the phrase in question and so I presume ‘around’ includes the entire perimeter of the pool.

Given the quantum of time available for Assessor of huge number of answer books, would be only looking for answer and pray your daughter awarded full marks to this question.

But believe Almighty helps always hard working and sincere ones. Now leave it at that and try divert mind of daughter from this and let her concentrate perform well in impending exams of other subjects.
Best wishes to your daughter and you.

    God Bless.

This thread reminds me of a time when I struggled to find value for powerfactor which is always expressed as value of cosine of the angle. The value used to be between 0 & 1. I was looking for value something like zero point some two numerals. This was not there in that question. But I assumed it as cos theta and arrived at answer in terms of cos theta. This is one out of 8 questions and this one carried 12.5 marks. Rest seven I had solved correctly.

After handing answer book to invigilator as I was near the entrance to exit the examination
hall, I remembered the word “unity” appeared in that question. It occurred like a flash that power factor is unity means cos of 0° is equal to one. I got the angle!

OMG . As I was still one leg inside the hall, I went back to invigilator to request to return my answer book whence, hey presto , he was looking at the face page of my answer book where at the top my class “technologist number” was over written. He saw me in front and asked to rewrite the number aside.

I took that God-Sent opportunity and did the needful!

I then remembered my mom who said everything happens correctly as willed by Almighty but one should leave the result to Him. I left the result to Him.
Thanks for the opportunity to go nostalgic.

I solved the problem before I read either of the solutions you posted and I used the first approach. I think the issue here is the interpretation of the word 'sidewalk'. I'm not sure how common it is in Indian parlance these days but I never heard it while growing up. I can see how your daughter might have misunderstood the width to apply to the sidewalk across the pool. Unfortunately I don't think her approach is correct. The definition of width in geometry is quite precise. A width is a contiguous measure taken at right angles from edge to edge of a geometric shape; the smallest of two or three dimensions. The assumption that a width could be split across the pool is not consistent with the definition of width.

x as the width of the whole sidewalk :
This makes sense if one assumes that the sidewalk is split across the pool, but a sidewalk is a rectangular path/border that stretches around/along an object/edge. The problem explicitly uses this terminology. The sidewalk wraps around the pool but it's width remains the same throughout, x meters. Think of it this way - what if the problem said, "There is a border of width x meters around the pool." A border/path of width x meters around the pool cannot be interpreted as a shape split across the pool. Same applies to a sidewalk.

It's an honest mistake due to the wording of the problem. I don't think you should try to help her overcome her feelings. As parents we try to handle or fix our children's hurts. But they need to feel the disappointment in order to grow. Just make sure she knows you are there if she needs you. She will come out stronger for having had this experience. Hang in there! Hugs!
