Hi, My baby just turned 1 recently. Currently he is on family pot most of the days. We are vegetarians. But I’m not sure if I’m doing the right thing for his snacks. I usually give him fruits like berries ( blueberries / raspberries) mostly. Is it ok to give just fruits as a snack? Or I should be giving him any other thing like high fat / protein like nut butter , hummus etc! Also can I give nuts daily for Omega 3? Please suggest some healthy snack options( Meals are also welcome)
Fruits are a great snack. I give all types: berries, grapes (cut in half), orange pieces, pineapple, mango, banana, kiwi and so on. You can give hummus and nut butters. Or eggs and cheese sticks if you eat them. I used to also put out small servings of black beans, red beans and chickpeas from the cans. Our pediatrician suggested giving small amounts of peanut butter to decrease chances of allergies later. I don’t think I gave nuts that early. I follow Kids Eat in Color on Instagram for fun, healthy ideas. She has lots of vegetarian options too.
Thanks @MalStrom. Will start giving nut butter and hummus. I recently started following her on IG. She has lots of good info!
Fruits are a great snacks @shravs3 . Not sure why you are thinking otherwise. Since you have mentioned it's mostly rasberries and blueberries - I would suggest more Varieties and including more n more seasonal fruits. Other snack options : potatoes, sweet potatoes, makhana , dry fruit ladoo, (he may not have enough teeth to chew the nuts right?), vegetable tikkis, Ragi ladoo etc. Will share more as I remember.
nuts they can't digest that early (till 2 years), may be ok in the form of nut butter by introducing little by little and wait for couple days.
I felt his diet has less protein so wanted to check if I need to tweak his snacks. Yes I give him variety of fruits but some days I’m lazy to cut the fruits lol. Thanks for the ideas will try to make some nut laddoos!! He definitely has the sweet tooth like his mamma
Yoghurt is good source of protein. You can also give your little son suji chila with some veggies in it like finely chopped carrot, capsicum, onion and smear little ghee on it.
Be sure to make very small pieces of the nuts if you are giving them. Choking is a big hazard for children of that age. Also, check for his allergies. Usually it shouldn’t be a problem if you or anyone in the family have no allergies. Generally, fruits are added later and normal food at the beginning because they won't like salty foods once they are used to fruits or sweeter foods. That's why fruits are added later on to the diet
