Got me thinking after reading threads and responses on IL but I see same pattern even when I talk to friends who have issues. Most common complaint heard is anger issues or not caring for partner/kids. Older generation women used to handle these quite well, general advice was to remain calm and nod your head till anger passes, then gently remind man that ultimately he is responsible to provide financial and emotional support to family. Later on talk through issues he is facing and resolve them. Most important, agree on change in behavior to ensure it does not repeat. Current generation seems to do opposite, they yell back, threaten to walk out, escalate situation further, talk about separation and in general do not resolve the issues. The unresolved issues keep coming back in cycles and get worse over the years leading to complete breakdown. Current generation also seems to think that women who de-escalate or politely work through issues are meek cowards who cannot stand up for themselves. In western countries there is active feminist groups that claim its OK to be single and its OK to divorce etc. They are missing the main point understood by older generation. Nothing beats happy family (even when woman is working or is sole bread winner), far far far far below that is a single unmarried or widowed woman and little below that are divorced women.

Clearly my older generation missed something. Even my grandparents did not hold such regressive attitudes.

No its based on depression and mental health stats between women of different races and relationship status in US. Its not normal to be depressed and think of suicide. Happily married women have much less chance compared to failed/failing marriages or single women

Failed marriages could be due to many reasons like abuse, no respect. When violence and serial abuse is involved, the woman has to get out before killing herself.
A single woman may not have found a spouse to her liking.
Many woman live in depression in their marriage just for the sake of society.
Most marriages are not the happiest. Lots of adjustments are involved.

Probably correct, back then no one realized how harmful it was for society in general and women in particular to get into fights and walk out of marriages. I would not say its regressive attitude, its quite progressive to look at reality

That was the point I was making, its possible to resolve peacefully instead of suffering abuse

The central point of my post, you can see most responses are stuck and fixated on the last sentence and want to shout it down instead of reading the entire post
