I had taken vacation today! I applied for the vacation a couple of days ago. And my director scheduled for a town hall meeting today. I came to know only yesterday and I told them that I’m on vacation and asked should I cancel! She said not required and you enjoy the vacation!! Should I have canceled the vacation to attend the meeting? Or my decision of not canceling the vacation was good for me? This is giving me stress! I applied for vacation to shed my stress but now I’m in more stress! Please reply! Your reply may make me feel better!

You should take your scheduled vacation as planned.

You mean you took a holiday on one day or a longer vacation starting today?

So then you are just taking "off" on that day and its not a vacation. Vacation would be for longer periods of time say 1 week etc. It is strange that she is calling the "town hall" on the one day you are away.
May i ask - do you feel u are facing any discrimination at work?

If you decide to take a day off to destress, focus on that. The missed town hall meeting, take what you director said at face value -- it's fine if you miss it.

Sometime later, you can reflect a little more (not too much) on it. How many were attending the meeting. Was it possible or necessary for the director to find a day when all could attend. How important are town hall meetings at your work.

On a general note, when already stressed, try to take as many things as you can at face value. Assume the best until proven otherwise.

    Hi Indu,

Please don't fret so much about your director's town hall. Most of these meeting halls are visibility events for people in the leadership spectrum to perform "their" job as they get evaluated on these large-org like things.

Unless your role is to be a partner to this org director on a peer-to-peer basis, your day-off or vacation, however you want to call it, is irrelevant in the larger scheme of things.

You need to be working in a really petty, insecure management or leadership chain for one individual's day-off to matter so much.

If you are an inconsequential worker-bee like me, just relax and let go. You will be just fine. Take care.

It could be due to many things - age, race etc or a combination of many factors. The important point is if you feel discriminated against, then perhaps you should try to reason out whether it is well warranted or if you are just reading too much into things. Trust your instincts and take action accordingly. Only you know what is best for your situation.
