What is your opinion about Society stereotyping?

So much peer pressure in the society pushes a lot of people into depression if we are not a certain way.

    Also, the stereotyping..

In my opinion not one person is the same.No situations are similar. No family or no mindset is the same. Some are having contentment, some have ambitions which differs from person to person. Even we cannot compare ourselves to our own mothers or daughters.Nobody knows what goes on in a person’s mind and why they chose to be who they are for whatever reason.

In the name of society stereotyping, people face so many humiliations and frustrations and in certain cases it leads to depression.

    For example..

I went to a popular saree shop in Chennai and the sales person was showing us a saree which was pretty costly.

Another lady who looked very simple, touched the saree and the sales person retorted “ It is X amount. Can you afford it?”
We were a bit taken aback and anyways brought the saree.

The lady didn’t say anything and walked away.

Later she went to another section of sarees which was way costlier than what We had bought and she brought a couple of them.

    The sales person kept quiet.

Why I mentioned the above incident is..We don’t know!! Who and what anyone so capable of.

lot of society stereotypes and mental conditioning..

what is with the society stereotypes? What are some ways to break it or be more aware?

It was a little confusing as I was reading the post...as it appears to suggest they purchased it but you only brought it from one place to another or to show someone etc...

Another incident was when I was working as an office assistant and during that time,my hubby wanted to gift me with an LV for my birthday..

the comments I got from family was..
“ You should not take such a costly bag to office especially being in your position “..

Another time when I wanted to buy a costly dress..my relative commented “ You should not buy such a costly outfit coz you are at home now “.

Also..on top of my mind, even with celebs like Malaika Arora who has an awesome bod and wears bold outfits..lot of social media comments like she is old and shouldn’t wear etc is so rude. It’s not like those who comment aren’t going to become old and give up and become a said after they turn a particular age!

    Lot of stereotyping..

Yes. Not even one area left.

In America and India(more) sales person trying to decide what we can/should buy.

They do because of Sales person has a commission on what they sell, and don't want to waste time if they think this particular person is not going to buy? What could be the reason other than ego of theirs.

    True.. well said..

    Even Media!

They force ideas of how a person should be, what “style” is and what will be cool etc etc..

people then get swayed away trying to buy or be something they are not..

I remember when I was a teen used to have so much acne. I saw the pics of celebs with flawless skin and that would make me feel even worse. Will buy every cream I can afford lol.. Who knew about photoshop:)

Sai pallavi broke the stereotype when she came to the industry with acne prone skin and rocked the screen!

    @anika987

There are stereotypes in every single thing in this society ma. Though it's not shown directly in some cases it has indirect be it active or passive influence.

My father was such a kind of person who brought me up with a saying everyone is same be it wealth or anything else. I wear nose ring and the first thing which I experienced /heard from my office customer was his eager to know which category I belong to(not the town he asked of). I was dumbstruck. In my office this category plays major role and securities as treated bad by some. Very few of us are friendly.

But must say these stereotypes can be beat by only us by our way of teaching it to our next generation. From my father I learnt a lot.

My parents and in-laws are best example of it. They broke every stereotypes which they had faced and doesn't let me face it.

They made me realise, it is not necessary to break culture to overcome these stereotypes.

    Few examples:

    1. While others were scared of transgender when they approached them for money, my father made me get their blessings by giving them money and taught me to treat they as just as another gender.

    2. My mother and mil didn't made me sit or sleep out during my menstrual days. They took care of me and my mom being nurse let me sleep next to her. Its not like they ignored culture , they made of take bath , wash clothes unlike normal days.

    3. My parents and in laws, we have food together but there really was stereotype among our relations that men should be served food first and women should have it in kitchen

    4. Drying of women innerwear outside is restricted for my sis at her in-laws. But both my parents and inlaws, let me dry it under sunlight saying it kills germs.

    5. Best ever my favourite is men cooking in kitchen and doing household chores stereotype is totally broken at both my parents and in-laws. My father cooks too well, he even apply oil on my hair and even braids it. My DH, father, fil are good in sweeping, drying clothes and cooking. ( My dh helped me in cooking during my initial days as I had zero knowledge in it)

    6. I love the way they never restricted me from wearing skirt, tshirts at home

    7. My mil made a step a way beyond and stopped relations to make any comments about me and even restricted them from coming over (some ladies are really mean and like hawks looking for prey) stating that she doesn't wanna her Dil to feel how she felt in her days

    8. Giving birth to a child at right time and right age is really a good thing. But not all receive that blessings as per thier wish. My mom believes in me and hardly asks me about as she knows how it feels. My DH asked my mil not to ask me or discuss abt t with me as I am really hurt abt it. So she doesn't ask me abt it directly but ask me to take care and assures me that there is growth in technology and many ways are there to get pregnant. Though they are asked about and criticised about it by relations. They never let me know about it.

Public stereotypes - we can't break unless we are directly involved in it . And I am least bothered about others comment about it if I feel what I am doing is right.

Stereotypes at our home can be broken very easily and we can pay way for our next generation. I am hoping it pays good path for my own next generation when I get one.
