You can stand wherever you feel convenient, the truth is journalist are getting killed in India for speaking the truth, when the truth is exposed the lie will start to fade away, and you running away after the truth is exposed is not an surprise.

Vir Das is an Indian comedian who was performing in America before an Indian diaspora audience. He poked some fun at things Indian. If an American comedian (Trevor Noah?) was performing in India for an audience that is mainly American, I reckon he would make fun of the sorry contrasts we see in the U.S. -- the rich and poor divide, abortion rights, gun control laws, domestic violence, racial inequality. Such satire or observations are part of their profession. That is what they do.

A different set of standards apply to (ex) presidents, PM's, their immediate families and the leaders of the opposition. These people "represent" India when they speak abroad. So, Modi's words in Seoul and Shanghai were not becoming of a PM.

    Source
Addressing the Indian diaspora in Seoul, Modi said, “There was a time when people used to feel that what sin they committed in their past life which resulted in taking birth in India, is this what you call a country and a government, is this how the people are, let’s leave it and go somewhere else, and people did leave. Now I can say it with firm belief that intelligent people from all walks of life, renowned scientists too, even if they are earning big abroad but now they are eager and happy to come back and settle India for even lesser incomes," he said.

In Shanghai, Modi had said, “Indians were feeling pessimistic about their own country till recently but my government has tried its best during its first year in office to change that."

The video of that speech is even more painful to watch than reading the words:

Funny that his party folks are lodging police complaints against Vir Das. : )

The monologue is a political satire balancing both good and bad and holding mirror on current India. Truth sometimes hurts but what hurts more is that people are focusing on the messenger and the impact of the message is lost.

This is not new, look at the COVID death in UP how they covered up. UP Govt. orders removal of Ramnami sheets from buried dead bodies by river banks, the logic is if you remove all the traces of evidence then there is no crime.

    Objectionable, no
Funny , no , not really.
Shame - no not at the speech, but at the state of affairs
Even though it was outside India, audience is mostly NRIs or Indian Americans. Only they are likely to understand the context . So it wasnt so much "dirty laundry in public" , at best it is showing the helplessness of a family member to the extended family

The job of comedy is at times to showcase the truth in a palatable way. He talks of 2 Indias, why should we focus on the one that shows it in negative light? The majority but average citizens are in the other India. But are helpless as the powerful minority exploit / make their own India - and hide behind the patriotic citizens to defend them. And time and again , the desh bhakts fall for it. What is more shameful the acts or the fact that someone pointed out the irony?

Sigh, things havent changed, in olden day movies, we have seen husband is physically abuses the wife on the road and she is screaming in pain, asking him to stop. A samaritan stops/advises the husband, and the beaten wife will fight with the well wisher , shouting "He is my my husband , he can do whatever he wants, I am not objecting, this is between us, who are you to?"

    smh
