My cousin is a fresher , (In India ) . she has just passed out from B.Tech and in non IT branch.
In her branch job opportunities are not so good and she wants to pursue career in IT, she made use of free time to do IT related certification.
She has knowledge of software testing, manual and automated, website designing ( basic), technical writing, HTML, and she is learning basics of a couple of scripting languages too.
She has applied for fresher jobs in both MNCs and startups and small companies too.
She has done some small freelance projects online during holidays.
She is saying she is confident of getting a job offer in one MNC and one startup company.
But the question she has is
    * For freshers, is it better to work initially in a big MNC or small startup company?
    * Package seems to be very similar in that MNC and startup company both. Not much difference. MNCis paying lightly more.
    * MNC has big swanky offices and startup has a smaller office. She was impressed with the MNC office.
    * She is intimidated by the fact that in the startup company she would have to work 6 or 7 days a week as they are getting new projects and employees have to work around the clock to finish their tasks and achieve their timelines. No fixed timings or wfh policies. Wfh is usually at the discretion of manager.
In MNC mostly Saturday’s and Sunday’s are holidays. Except for crucial work which requires them to work on weekends. Fixed shift timing in MNC.
    * MNC is offering office transport for selected shifts like 9 to 6 or 10 to 7. In startup she would have to use public transport and make her own arrangements for travel.
    * Lot of people are saying that if we work in a smaller startup company we can learn more a small everything is developed from scratch. But in MNC the actual work is almost done and juniors are just doing routine maintenance and reporting work and not learning much.
    * she is impressed by the perks of working in MNC and the brand value of the MNC.

Now that offices are slowly opening up, what is the best kind of company to start her IT career ?
Ladies in IT field in India. please advice which kind of company isn’t best for junior IT professionals to start their career and learn? Because initial years if they struggle and knowledge and experience later they can jump to good better paying jobs.

Both have their pros and cons but for this specific case, non-IT background trying to break into IT, the MNC is a better choice. Once she has experience on her resume with the MNC label she will have an easier time finding other IT jobs. In a startup your work isn’t restricted to one specific role. You have to don a bunch of hats depending on the need of the hour. If she is just starting to learn programming basics she might find it very challenging and it will lead to stress and or poor performance, neither of which is ideal for someone trying to establish themselves in a new field. Challenging start up positions are best for people whose fundamentals are rock solid. That helps them cope with the pressure cooker environment. No one has the time to help you, and mistakes are not tolerated. The MNC job as you describe it will help her ease into a new field and the brand name will give her the legitimacy she will need to find a foothold in IT. She can always go to a startup after spending a couple of years with a well-known company.

That depends squarely on what she wants to be after a decade or two!
With start-ups there is tremendous scope for learning & getting fresh insights and a kind of freedom to be innovative. Emoluments May be less or pittance. But in the long run, he or she turns into be the chief person or join the top echelons and even enter the board. Infosys - Microsoft - Gates & Narayana MOORTHYs are examples.

In mnc one has to be carrying on with commands of superiors and to start with huge emoluments and no scope to be innovative. One would be at the bottom of pyramid and competitive among hundreds to climb up hierarchical pyramid.

I have friends who had chosen small & big companies at the beginning of their career. Those who joined small companies struggled a lot in the first decade of their career with poor salary but in later years they had attained chief position and peaceful rich retired life. But those who joined for larger part of their career could never attain higher status except little higher emoluments.

My BIL son after BE & MBA joined Infosys and in a year he resigned joined a smaller company in a middle level. But within a decade, he turned big and now number two in the organisation.
