I have a day off so I thought about posting the books that we have recently enjoyed and some that have been read again and again in our household. Many of these suggestions came from @Srama. Thank you so much dear @Srama for helping us find the books that our kids can't put down.

I will start with the six-year-old. She isn't reading very well yet but she tries. She loves to be read to and we snuggle with books for hours. Some of her favorites are:

Matilda (Thank you @Srama)- Both kids love this book but my daughter is absolutely in love with Roald Dahl's books now. I wish I would have read it as a child!

Charlie and the Chocolate factory- Another Roald Dahl's beautifully written work! And another one of my kids' new favorites. My daughter's pearl of wisdom-"Why do Vruca's parents buy her everything? They shouldn't buy everything she asks, she is just a kid, she doesn't even know if she wants or needs something!" Both kids love this one!

The Magic Finger- Another gem from Roald Dahl. This is a short book and again my daughter loves it more than my son. !

The Phantom Tollbooth (another one of @Srama recommendations)- What a great book with tons of wordplay. My 6-year old didn't quite get the wordplay but she still enjoyed it and has asked to read it multiple times. My 8-year old really gets the kick out of it. A lot of fun reading it to him.

The Adventures of Penrose the Mathematical Cat- This one is another favorite of both kids but esp. my daughter who loves everything cats. It is a delightful book with fun math topics.

Charlotte's Web - My daughter was in theater summer camp where they worked on a screenplay based on Charlotte's web. The book is equally loved by both kids and my daughter loves to yell out her part whenever we read it!

Harry Potter series- My kids are huge fans of HP! My son has read the complete series thrice now and these books usually make it to the car drives. Long enough for a long drive. My daughter loves us to read the HP books to her.

Dogman comics- Both kids love these comics. These are quite silly but they love the Villian Petey and his clone, Lil Petey!

P is for Pterodactyl and No Reading Allowed- What fun! My daughter gets a few words but these are more fun for my son. Great for understanding the homophones and homonyms!

Amelia Bedelia series and other young reader books that she can read by herself are always a good choice for her age group!

Now, for the 8-year-old: Several books above are loved by both kids but I am listing some that my daughter doesn't enjoy much but my 8-year old son loves!

The adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. This is my husband's all-time favorite.
The Twits- Another gem from Dahl's but my daughter hasn't gotten into this yet.
The Hobbit by J R Tolkien- Another one of my husband's favorite and now my son's as well!
A walk in the Woods- Not sure if my son gets the author's point of view but he liked it regardless. I am sure he will be reaching out for this when he is older. The Appalachian Trail is close to our hearts. DH and I met in Georgia and have been on that trail many times so it was fun for me to read it to the kids.
Island of the Blue Dolphins- Another of @Srama recommendations! I started reading it to my daughter but she didn't care for it. My son, however, has read it twice now.
The Chronicles of Prydain- (The High King, Taran Wanderer, The Castle of Llyr, and The book of three). Truth be told, these aren't my kind of books but both boys (DH and son) love them. My son has finished the series twice or maybe thrice.

American as Paneer Pie- One of my friends recommended this book for Indian-American girls. I bought this for my other friend's daughter and my kids. The story is about a girl in the small-town USA who is trying to come to accept her differences and uniqueness as a desi-American in a mostly white town.

He also likes a lot of non-fiction books but those are different for different kids based on their interests. He reads almost everything he can find- currently, he is reading two non-fiction books- one on viruses and another on weather patterns.

Dear @Srama. Thank you! I very much look forward to your list.

Another series that is well loved by both kids (but more so the 8 yo) is ‘Diary of the wimpy kid’ and his friend’s account ‘Diary of the friendly kid’.
I will keep adding more as we finish new books.

Just came to add two new books that we finished.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Young Readers Edition- This was recommended by his teacher. It is set in Malawi and is a great story about survival, ingenuity, and technology. Also provided a glimpse of a different culture. I want to read the full version now. There are a few things that readers may find a bit disappointing but overall a good read!

When the Apricots Bloom by Gina Wilkinson, a former foreign correspondent of several prominent news outlets. Such a moving and informative tale of life in Iraq under the heavy fist of Saddam Hussein. Okay, this is not a kids' book but I couldn't put it down! So, my kiddo asked me what was the book about and as I started describing it, he wanted me to read it to him. He just finished a "Spy camp" and was very interested in this story of espionage.

I love love love this thread! :)

@nuss, have you tried Julia Donaldson books for your daughter? Gruffalo, Gruffalo's child, Room on the broom, Paper dolls, etc. are very engaging and interesting books for that age group. :)

The libraries in India are not always equipped with the latest/ good books. Most of the time, I end up buying books. However, I cannot always afford to do that due to monetary & space restrictions. Could someone please suggest a good idea to deal with this issue? Any online resource or something?

    Dear @nayidulhan ,

So sorry about my delayed response and thank you for the tag! I had completely forgotten about this. Here are some books. It is just that I have not read all of them - you will have to do some research by yourself. I have tried to add comments where possible. Books are for KG to grade 2. Based on your childs age and development, you may have to filter out! Hope it helps. If you need for grades 3 and over, please do let me know.

    Kindergarten to grade 2 -

Reach for the Moon (Abeel, Samantha)
    The Fortune Tellers (Alexander, Lloyd)
    Feelings
    Anno's Journey
    Dawn (Bang, Molly)
The Eleventh Hour ( Base, Graeme)
Turtle Knows your name (Bryan, Ashyley)
    Dandelion (Bunting, Eve)
Ramona the Brave (Cleary, Beverly) - quite popular
    Weslandia (Fleischman, Paul)
    Shadows and Reflections (Hoban, Tana)
The Book with no Pictures (b.J.Novak) - the laughter this brings from my students!!
Who Came Down that Road ( Lyon, George Ella)
    Clementine (Pennypacker, Sara)
Sequoyah, The Cherokee Man Who Gave his People Writing (Rumford, James) - I love teaching about Sequoyah and do quite a few activities to understand how language is constructed and end up venturing further into morse code and other details based on student interest.
How I learned Geography (Shulevitz, Uri)
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (Viorst, Judith) - a very popular book
    Hannah (Whelan, Gloria)
    Free Fall (Wiesner, David)

When my son (now 17) was in the age group 6-8, he loved the Wimpy Kid series, Geronimo Stilton series and would read Harry Potter every time he could lay his little hands on my phone!

Any long journeys or wait times were full of "Harry Potter Quiz" games!

He also enjoyed Roald Dahl - All his books without exception!

There was this Magic Bus Series and the Magic Tree series - where the kid-characters would cross a certain something and reach the age of Dinosaurs or the North Pole and would have an adventure while learning about history or nature! He learnt a lot of facts and figures and history from them. Again became quiz questions for our long journeys! His friends & cousins learnt so much about animals and nature from his "Quizzes"

Enid Blyton, Hardy Boys, Secret Seven, Nancy Drew, Percy Jackson

My friends used to call him "Chitti Robot" - A movie in which the actor is a Robot who flips through books and processes them in an instant.

Apart from these, he devoured the Panchatantra, Jataka Tales, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Stories from the Vedas, Stories of little kids - Dhruva, Prahlada, Krishna, Ashtavakra & Nachiketa! The entire Amar Chitra Katha series and Tinkles! There were several children's books from the Ramakrishna Mission, Sai trust etc - Chinna Katha series (Short stories) from Indian History! Any quiz on India, culture or history - his teachers would put his name forward!

He also enjoyed Japanese and Greek & Nordic Mythology stories! Stories from around the world was one of his favourites. Of course The Hobbit !

When he was 10, Rick Riordan was his favourite author... then he loved the 39 clues series, Horatio Alger books..

His grandpa asked him to write a few articles and publish a blog when he was 10 - when he did that he was "rewarded" with a kindle and we reduced our physical books...

When he came to 10th std, we donated at least 500 books to a school library after letting his younger cousins & friends pick their favourites.
Sorry, it is a jumble of authors and series and not names of each book - the post would get too long, and of course I don't remember all the titles! But can get more specifics if required!
    Keep smiling
    hrastro
